Go To

"Love for Sale" is an episode in the sixth season of The Golden Girls.

As the Children's Hospital Bachelorette Auction approaches, Rose and Blanche enlist Dorothy into the auction. Stan drops by and reveals that he and Dorothy have jointly inherited an apartment complex left by his recently-deceased uncle and are landlords of said apartment, and Sophia eagerly awaits the arrival of Angelo, who is now broke and desperate and ends up living in the apartment Dorothy and Stan now inherit and own.

Tropes seen in this episode include:

  • Bachelorette Auction:
    • Rose and Blanche has Dorothy participating in one such auction for charity, being emceed by Rose. Unfortunately for her, recently-wealthy Stan shows up and ends up buying her for $500.
    • Dorothy and Blanche have a brief discussion about one that took place last year with Dorothy being among the women being put on the bid — unfortunately for Dorothy, her highest bidder back then was less than ideal, being a balloon salesman who, as Dorothy speculates, might have gotten a real human as a date for the first time in said auction.
  • Dark Horse Victory: As Dorothy and Blanche's dialogue indicate, Dorothy's highest bidder in the Bachelorette Auction last year ended up being a balloon salesman named "Sid". Dorothy is not happy about it.
Blanche: Hey, who knew that sawed-off little gnome would outbid a Navy admiral, the fire chief, and that juror who's a dead-ringer for Mr. Richard Widmark?
    [...]
Rose: Oh, come on, Dorothy. That balloon man couldn't have been that terrible.
Dorothy: I got the feeling I was the man's first date that wasn't inflatable.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Stan makes one here by bidding for Dorothy in the Bachelorette Auction for $500.
  • Lethal Chef: Played with.
  • Riches to Rags: As Angelo discloses to the girls, he has gone from being a business owner to being broke after spending so much time and money on a Sicilian woman (who eventually left him for a 6'7'' basketball player in the U.S.) that he neglected his business to the point of it being foreclosed.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • After hearing of Angelo's plight, Sophia decides to help him out any way she can, only to fold quickly after her one solution falls apart.
Angelo: What am I gonna do?
Sophia: You're gonna trust in your family because family is there when you're down, and family stops at nothing — nothing — to help one of their own. *turning to Blanche* Blanche, I want brother Angelo to come live with us.
Blanche: Oh, I'm sorry, Sophia. There's just no room.
      Sophia: Hey, I tried.
    • At the Bachelorette Auction, Blanche convinces a man she knows to bid on Dorothy in order to make sure Dorothy doesn't end up with some random guy she doesn't like and privately expresses confidence to Sophia that she would spend no more than $20 or $30 for Dorothy. Stan ends up accidentally derailing Blanche's plan when he enters the bidding, starting at $100.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Dorothy tries to make Stan back down from continuing to bid on her by making a statement about what she'd rather do than go out with him. It does nothing to deter him, though Hilarity Ensues as a random man reacts to her statement with an Accidental Bid, which Stan proceeds to outbid anyway.
Dorothy: Stanley, stop it. I'm not going out with you. I would rather be Bound and Gagged and left on an ant hill, covered with honey.
Random Guy: $400! [sits down after realizing what he just did and noticing eyes upon him]
