"Like the Beep Beep Beep of the Tom Tom" is an episode in the fifth season of The Golden Girls.

Blanche feels insecure about her body after having a pacemaker installed.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Rose puts on a few pounds and decides to go on the St. Olaf "I-Can't-Believe-This-Is-Cheese" diet. In spite of its name, however, you eat nothing but rice.
  • Brick Joke: Before Blanche's scheduled physical examination, Rose mentions that her mother used to sing "Over There" when Rose herself was getting stressed out. The song gets utilized not only while Blanche is being wheeled into surgery, but at the end of the episode as well — when Blanche has sex for the first time since the pacemaker installation.
Blanche: (singing behind closed door in her bedroom) Over there. Over there. (speaking) No, I meant over there. (singing again) Send the word. Send the word over there.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: The episode's title is a play on "Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom," a lyric from the Cole Porter standard "Night and Day."
  • Non-Indicative Name: In-Universe. The St. Olaf "I-Can't-Believe-This-Is-Cheese" diet turns out to require consumption of nothing but rice.
  • Reaction Shot: Dorothy gives one — without the camera focusing on her — when an old dough-boy salutes them while they sing "Over There" to Blanche as she's being wheeled into surgery.
