Recap / The Goldbergs S 5 E 12 Dinner With The Goldbergs

Go To

Erica warns Geoff about going to dinner with her family, but he insists; by dinner's end, Geoff hits his breaking point.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Played with, as the family keeps misidentifying one waiter as theirs, but mainly to try and get additional service through miscommunication.
  • Birthday Party Goes Wrong: The episode is set on Erica's birthday.
  • Bratty Food Demand:
    • Oh dear god, nearly all of the Goldbergs fall into this at the restaurant. Adam argues about being given the Kid's Menu, despite not having the stomach for a large steak. Barry demands fish (it's a steakhouse) and steals food off of others' plates when it's not perfect quality, as well as complain about a lack of left-handed cutlery. Murray has a strict ordering policy that prevents Geoff from ordering more than a soup, in addition to lying about "his twins" having a birthday just to get one more free cake (Geoff & Erica, the latter actually celebrating her birthday; this also prevents them from behaving romantically to each other), having everyone share a single soda because of free refills, and also insisting that they'll take home anything that'll be thrown out (even food they didn't order, or returned) while refusing to pay for it. And Beverly, aside from filling her purse with free rolls and sugar packets and taking 10 minutes to order, steals another table's order when their own food is slow to arrive. She also takes her time trying to find the perfect table where the family can sit. Pops makes no issues with the food, but chooses to dine with complete strangers that were having private celebrations, and Erica, while initially aghast and trying to warn Geoff of impending doom, just follows along while acknowledging their rudeness after he says he can handle it.
    • The home video at the end showed the inspiration behind this episode: the real Goldberg family have their dinner at a local seafood restaurant. Adam enjoys a meal from the kids' menu despite being a teenager, Barry ordering ribs (not seafood), Pops chats with other customers, and he gets a free birthday cake despite it not being his birthday on that day.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Geoff invited the whole family to celebrate Erica's birthday at Beefsteak Charlie's, unaware of their bad restaurant habits that take focus over celebration.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Pops spends the evening sitting at other tables and trying to converse with people celebrating graduations, engagements, and other private events.
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • Geoff finally breaks down and has an outburst at the whole family after Murray starts to choke on his food, keeps eating while coughing, and refuses to let Geoff interrupt his meal by saving his life.
    • In The Tag, Beverly screams "EAT IT!" at Barry when he tries getting out of eating leftovers from the remainder (as in, the other 2/3) of the fish he had ordered.
  • Secret Test of Character: Erica warns Geoff that a family dinner at a restaurant will drive him away from her and her crazy relatives; not only does he stay (after an outburst), Murray ends up respecting him enough to let him order an appetizer next time.
  • The Scrooge: In addition to all of the packets and bread rolls she's stuffed into her purse, Beverly complains about being overcharged at the end of the meal because of all the food they "sent back" but still planned to take home, while Murray eagerly reminds her about the free cakes and soda refills.
  • Something We Forgot: After the Goldbergs finish debating the bill and amends made with Geoff, Erica remarks that they'll have to come back since they left Pops with the family he was currently sitting with.
