A Plot: Adam and his nerdy friends Dave Kim, David Sirota and "Tiny" Tyler are sick and tired of always being humiliated athletically and being picked last for team sports in gym class. Adam talks to Coach Mellor about it and is made team captain, but Barry convinces Adam to pick winners, betraying his loser friends. Coach wants to make the next class fair and lets Dave Kim to pick the next game, and he picks Dungeons & Dragons, specifically The Ghost Tower of Inverness tournament module.

B Plot: Erica decides to go to CMU (Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, but Beverly and Murray aren't on board with her choice. Beverly doesn't want her daughter to be that far from home, while Murray is upset that his "princess" will be spending time on campus living with boys. And Pops, who just watched the movie Back to School, is considering going to college himself.

  • Accidental Misnaming: When Erica complains that her parents are thinking about their own needs and how she "gets no respect", Beverly thinks she's quoting "Rodney Danger-Zone".
  • Hidden Depths: It turns out that Barry already has a pre-made character sheet for the D&D game, having secretly hoped for a while that Adam would ask him to join one of his sessions. The other athletes also turn out to be much kinder to the nerds once it's brought to their attention how bad they've felt being picked last, even using their game terminology to connect with them.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Dave Kim issues his challenge and Adam starts getting upset at the athletes for not understanding the game, the athletes get angry and claim Adam doesn't understand what it's like to feel bad for not being good at something other people are talented at...only to be told that this is how Adam and his friends have felt during every single athletic event.
  • It's All About Me: Erica has an outburst after her father wants her to stay closer to home, and Beverly considers Pops' idea and plans to join Erica at college, since both of them are prioritizing their own desires over hers. After realizing how selfish they were being, they decide to let Erica go...though Beverly still asks her to "sleep on it" when she refuses to bring her along.
  • Picked Last: Adam and his friends are tired of this happening to them. But when Adam is given a chance to avert this, Barry convinces him to pick the jocks over his friends.
  • RPG Episode: The climax of Adam's plot is a tournament of Dungeons & Dragons between his team of jocks and Dave Kim's team of his and Adam's nerd friends.
  • Throwing The Game: Both Adam and Dave's teams end up playing for four hours until it gets down to the last roll. It's up to Adam to take his team home, but he decides to throw the game by feeding himself to a monster in order to get his friends to respect him again.
  • Twin Threesome Fantasy: In The Tag, Barry tries to roleplay his D&D character seducing a wild She-Wolf, adding that she has a twin sister asking him to join them in a hot tub, but rolls a Natural 1 and gets devoured.
