Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 6 DKNY

Go To

A Plot: Beverly completely takes over taking care of her new granddaughter, terrorizing Geoff in the process.

B Plot: Adam decides to visit Dave Kim, who went to NYU all by himself when Adam decided to stay in Jenkintown, and is surprised that his old friend has a brand new image.

  • Bad Humor Truck: Barry's idea for a scary Halloween display is an ice-cream truck he bought at a police auction after the driver did "unspeakable things" and has himself and the JTP dress as ice-cream vendors covered in blood (actually raspberry syrup). No one got scared by it (aside from Geoff having a nightmare of Beverly hunting him down in it when she arrives to deliver some forgotten diaper cream while he's still asleep), but they sold a lot of ice-cream and made kids happy, which Barry found to be a huge disappointment in The Tag.
  • Be Yourself: Played with in the B Plot. Adam and Dave Kim end up fighting because Adam feels disrespected by Dave Kim's pretentious new friend group and angry that Dave Kim has changed as well, and it soon turns out that the entire friend group are phonies, but Dave feels like he should be allowed to try new things while at university without Adam and doesn't want to be his old dorky self for the rest of his life. They compromise in the end, with Adam accepting that Dave Kim is trying to find his way in life and Dave Kim promising to have fun with Adam like they used to when Adam starts attending next year.
  • Celebrity Impersonator: Mr. Glascott is able to give Adam a lift to New York because he's going there himself to participate in a Prince impersonation contest. After coming in 17th place out of 17 people, Adam convinces him to salvage Dave Kim's Halloween party by showing up to perform, with the attendees too sloshed to tell the difference between Mr. Glascott and the real thing in the dark.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Dave Kim and his friends go dressed up as famous artists, with Dave Kim as Leonardo da Vinci. Adam misunderstood and went as a Ninja Turtle.
  • Halloween Episode: The episode premiered close to Halloween 2022, and the A-Plot becomes a thriller when Beverly tracks Geoff and Erica down in Barry's Bad Humor Truck while the B-Plot has Adam attend Dave Kim's Halloween party.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Thanks to Beverly constantly taking care of baby Muriel before Geoff has the chance to, and then swooping in to save the day when Geoff tries to get some time away from Bev at the beach house but forgets Muriel's diaper cream, Geoff starts thinking that he's not deserving of spending time with his daughter even when Beverly is prodded into sharing. To lift his spirits, Beverly admits that she may be hyper-confident now, but was just as anxious and self-doubting as Geoff back when she originally raised Erica, and Muriel is lucky to have him for a father.
  • Hipster: The new group of friends Dave Kim has made at NYU completely clash with Adam's love of pop culture by decrying modern media as insipid and misogynist, and prefer niche Ethiopian cuisine over local New York fast food. It later turns out that all of them are just posers trying to get their own fresh starts at university, with Fitz (the one who only likes things "ironically") only learning about the meaning of irony earlier that week, Brett (the one decrying capitalism) being the son of a White Castle franchiser, and Tamsin (the vegetarian) completely faking a UK accent.
  • Ignored Epiphany: In The Tag, Barry realizes that the true meaning of Halloween is giving after his day as an ice cream salesman...and decides to give some trick-or-treaters a scare by yelling at them while holding a skeleton prop instead of giving them candy.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Beverly always seems to sense when her grandchild needs her, and so is always there whenever Geoff wants to hold her.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Dave Kim's friend Tamsin speaks with a British accent (which Adam at first thinks is Australian), but later she drops it and confesses that she's from Tuscon, Arizona.
  • Tempting Fate: In the middle of Barry's Ignored Epiphany, Rob and Andy start saying how they're glad Barry's finally learned something from his latest failed attempt to cause the most terror on Halloween, with Matt Bradley being aware enough to instead say "Wait for it..."
  • Title Drop: "DKNY" is, in addition to a notable fashion line (which Adam and Dave Kim acknowledge), how Dave Kim refers to his current New York image.
  • True Meaning of Christmas: Parodied in The Tag, when Barry discovers the true meaning of Halloween...briefly.
  • Wild Teen Party: Upset at Adam being unhappy with his new pretentious friends and wanting to prove he's capable of doing fine in university without Adam, Dave Kim boasts that he can host one of these on Halloween. He fails, leading to Dave Kim and Adam arguing about the pros and cons of trying to reinvent yourself, and then Adam salvages it by having Mr. Glascott act as a Prince Celebrity Impersonator mistaken for the real deal.
