Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 16 The Better Annie

Go To

A Plot: Adam decides to properly introduce his current girlfriend Carmen to the rest of his family, only to learn that Erica's already familiar with her and still bitter from when they both auditioned for the lead role of a local version of Annie as kids.

B Plot: Pop-Pop's apartment has been repaired, but he's gotten used to sponging off of his family's generosity and asks Geoff to teach him how to act like a kind sap so they'll let him stay.

  • Alpha Bitch: According to Erica, Carmen was one in their youth, purposely scratching her name off of the audition sheet for playing Annie and then tricking her into instead playing the fat and bald Daddy Warbucks, which then led to Erica being typecast as bald men for every production she applied for after.
  • Brick Joke: In The Tag, Geoff, Adam, and Barry go to respectively congratulate/mock Erica for her performance in the local Annie production as Daddy Warbucks, the same role she stated she played as a kid due to Carmen's meddling.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Carmen claims that she has no recollection of why Erica is mad at her, and thus can't give Erica anything more than an empty apology, which only makes things worse. However, it eventually turns out she does remember their first meeting and is just ashamed about it.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Geoff's advice for Pop-Pop is to be Warm, Assist others, Never get in the way, and Compliment others, only realizing with horror what it can be shortened to when summarizing his own advice and Pop-Pop gladly proclaims he's ready to be a real WANC-er.
  • The "I Love You" Stigma: Due to the events of "Two-Timing Goldbergs" establishing that this is the first serious relationship Carmen's had in a long while, Adam has to keep stopping himself from saying that he loves Carmen before it's appropriate, and instead states that he "likes you with affection I'm not premature to label". Eventually, due to Erica pressing the issue of her sabotaging the Annie audition as children, Carmen admits that she remembered but didn't tell Adam, and is sorry that she lied to the man she loves, which in turn leads to Adam making sure that Carmen's okay and then stating that he loves her back.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The main reason that Pop-Pop tries to ingratiate himself to his family, and then plays up his supposed craziness when they think he has dementia, is because Adam, Barry and Beverly were excited to get the news that his apartment was fixed and stated how they were looking forward to him leaving instead of asking if he actually wanted to leave.
  • Mistaken for Insane: Barry and Beverly's reaction to Pop-Pop's uncharacteristic niceness towards them is to assume he's suffering from dementia, which Pop-Pop is willing to play along with because he'll still be taken care of.
  • Naked People Are Funny: The first thing Barry does after they get the news that Pop-Pop's apartment has been prepared is to change into just a bathrobe in order to use the hot tub, but it gets snagged as he passes his family and he ends up covering his exposed body with his hands in embarrassment.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Erica decides that the only way that Carmen can make up for her past Alpha Bitch status is to challenge Carmen to audition for the lead in a new local production of Annie, proving which one of them is truly the better Annie without resorting to sabotage, which Carmen initially accepts while acting competitive and still denying that she was the one that sabotaged Erica as kids. However, when it's time to actually audition, Carmen breaks down and admits she indeed sabotaged Erica because she envied everything Erica had while she was just decent at singing, leaving Erica feeling like a jerk and with the realization that auditioning for a child's role is awkward.
  • Unwanted Assistance: When Pop-Pop decides to be helpful to ingratiate himself to his relatives, he's very bad at it, doing things like washing (and shrinking) Beverly's wool sweaters, returning the papers he stole from Ginsey Kremp after reading them on the toilet without washing his hands, and vacuuming without actually turning the vacuum on.
