Recap / The Goldbergs 1990 Something

Go To

This special episode premiered midway through Season 5 of The Goldbergs. A decade after Adam Goldberg left William Penn Academy, Principal Glascott comes to blows with Mr. Mellor over how to best educate the children, while his nieces start attending and try their best to fit in.

  • Out of Focus: This episode stars now-principal Mr. Glascott and his family, with only Beverly Goldberg of The Goldbergs making an appearance. The Glascotts even provide narration instead of Adam.
  • Passing the Torch: The episode opens on Earl Ball making Mr. Glascott the new principal of William Penn Academy.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: The episode acts to set up Schooled, a series starring the staff of William Penn Academy in the 1990s instead of the 80's.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Mr. Glascott is the Blue, trying to restructure the school so that everyone is more open and feels like winners while abolishing seemingly-harmful practices such as "dodgeball" and "pep rallies", while Mr. Mellor acts as the Red, sticking to traditions and enforcing healthy competition in spite of Mr. Glascott's wishes.
  • Required Spinoff Crossover: Beverly Goldberg appears in two scenes, and Johnny Atkins appears at the DMV Mr. Mellor's sister initially works at, the latter trying to get a license plate that reads "Shaggin' Wagon".
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Principal Glascott's nieces have this. Felicia is extroverted, cynical, and enjoys Mr. Mellor's methods, while Gigi is bookish, optimistic, and wants to support her uncle even when it might lead to public embarrassment.
  • Struggling Single Mother: Mr. Glascott hires his sister onto the school staff as his secretary. She's a single mother with two teenage daughters who get to attend for free when she's hired.
