Libby and her mom go on a road trip to visit her dad, who she hasn't seen in years.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The main plot focuses on Libby, who is ready to see her father and goes on a road trip with her mom.
  • Babysitting Episode: Part of the episode focuses on Molly taking care of Libby's turtles while she's on her road trip.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Even though Matias didn't want to spend time with Libby, and Libby is understandably upset about this, her mom comforts her, and Libby thanks her for taking care of her.
  • Break the Cutie: When discovering her father is nothing more than an opportunistic deadbeat, Libby’s dreams are shattered one by one and is left heartbroken and depressed before her mother cheers her up.
  • Broken Pedestal: Matias becomes this to Libby upon meeting him.
  • Daddy Didn't Show: While it's ultimately averted, Leah worries this could still happen when they initially don't find Matias in the park. Ironically enough, he does show up, but not in spirit.
  • Deadly Rotary Fan: Scratch finds the last turtle on top of the ceiling fan and gets chopped to pieces trying to retrieve it. Being already dead, this is just an inconvenience.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: Matias shows signs of this as shown by the gift he sent to Libby (in this case, a cheap frog plush).
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Lampshaded and Played for Laughs when Scratch is asked to look after Libby's turtles for a moment when Molly had to get something for them. He looks away for a brief moment to solve a Crossword Puzzle, and they're immediately gone. The word? Foreshadow.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Libby and Leah arrive at the rendezvous point for meeting Matias, an eagle will notice that the place is called "Knottsworthy Park". Rather apropos, as it sounds like "Not Worthy", hinting at how Matias isn't anybody worth meeting.
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: Molly notes how unthoughtful it is that the gift Matias sent to Libby is a cheap frog plush, showing how he doesn't know about his daughter's interests, and didn't even bother hiding that it only cost one dollar as its price tag is still intact by the time Libby receives it. Libby still accepts it.
  • Good Parents: Leah, who despite not wanting to go on a road trip to visit Matias and cross two states, decides to do it for Libby so she can meet and know her dad. For the better part of the road trip, she's careful not to bad mouth Matias, understanding her daughter needs to come to her own conclusions about her father. When Matias crushes Libby's heart, she immediately consoles her.
  • Heroic BSoD: Libby doesn't handle Matias running out of her life once again well at all.
  • Holding the Floor: Molly does this at the end to Libby when she returns to retrieve her turtles to buy Scratch some time to find the last turtle.
  • Imagine Spot: The song "Me and My Dad", where Libby sings about the plans she wants to make with her dad to make up for the time they lost.
  • Irony: After it's made clear that Matias is more concerned with making his book a trilogy than spending even a little quality time with his daughter, Libby sadly returns to Leah and hands her the signed copy he gave her, titled "Chasing Miracles". Leah scoffs at the title and how, for someone who has "chased miracles" all his life, he overlooked the miracle that already was in his life: his family.
  • Just in Time: Molly and Scratch manage to find the last turtle at the time Libby returns from the road trip.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While not an exactly villain, Matias is quite jarring as he has no comedic traits whatsoever. Compared to Andrea’s parents, his neglect is not played for exaggeration in anyway and is played straight throughout his whole solo scene. Even his blatant neglect foreshadowed earlier when he gifts Libby a one dollar frog plushy isn’t presented in the show’s usual comedy.
  • Meaningful Echo: When Libby won't stop hounding her mom about what her father is like, Leah can only say that Matias has good and bad qualities. Regardless of what Libby will come to learn of her dad, Leah lets her know that one good thing he did was bestow her the miracle that is her beloved daughter. Later, after Libby is heartbroken by her dad turning down a chance at quality time together, Leah comforts her , and remarks on how Matias is too blind to realize that for all his efforts at "chasing miracles", he's missing out on the one miracle he already had, his daughter.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: After Scratch briefly looked at the crossword puzzle, the turtles disappeared fast before trying to find them.
  • Open Secret: Despite Molly's best efforts, Libby knows her well enough to be fully aware of the trouble Molly had babysitting her pet turtles.
  • Parental Neglect: Matias prefers spending his time making his book Chasing Miracles into a trilogy rather than spending time with Libby.
  • Road Trip Plot: Libby and Leah go on a road trip to visit Libby's dad, whom she hasn't seen in six years.
  • Running Gag: Scratch spends the whole episode doing a crossword, and whenever he reads one of the clues, the word happens to be appropriate to the current situation.
  • Selfie Fiend: Matias takes a selfie with Libby's book rather than Libby herself, showing how little he thinks of her.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Molly and Scratch are absent throughout the main story arc of the episode, leaving no room for any form of comedy when Libby meets and gets let down by Matias.
  • Unpleasant Parent Reveal: After six whole years of not being able to see him, Libby finally meets Matias, only for her to quickly learn that he cares about his writing career more than his family.
  • Visit by Divorced Dad: It's all but stated that Libby's parents are divorced, and the main plot of the episode involves Libby and her mother paying him a visit in the hopes that she can reconnect with him.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Libby learns about her dad's true nature, she's pretty downtrodden that someone who was supposed to be part of her life is more interested in making his own book a trilogy. In response, Leah scoffs at how Matias's book (titled "Chasing Miracles") reflects his inability to recognize he already had a miracle right in front of him, in the form of their beloved daughter. In short, she's letting Libby know she's a worthwhile daughter, and it's not her fault that Matias is too blind to realize that.

Steven Universe's Marty would be so proud of this guy.

How well does it match the trope?
