Recap / The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 2 E 32 Alaka Sham

Go To

To Molly's horror, Darryl has taken up a variety of magic-related scams with Scratch's help. The two soon earn the ire of Irving the Illusionist, who challenges Darryl to a magic showdown- in which the loser gives up performing magic for good.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Darryl's and Molly's stage names are Darryl the Dazzler and Molly the Magnificent.
  • Continuity Nod: Molly's "Milly" disguise makes another appearance when she uses it to infiltrate the party Darryl is performing at.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Molly is disgusted to discover that Darryl has taken up close-up magic to scam kids, with Scratch assisting him.
  • Exact Words: When Scratch is brought back to the Ghost World yet again, The Ghost Council try to warn him about the Curse Cabinet, but Scratch says if he hears the words "curse" and "cabinet", he would explode, so Bartholomew uses the words "hex" and "hutch" to warn Scratch about the Curse Cabinet overflowing and not make him mad at the same time.
  • Fake Wizardry: Darryl has Scratch do all the "magic" as part of his illusionist scam. Unfortunately, Scratch gets summoned back to the Ghost World to deal with the curse cabinet right before the showdown with Irving, leaving Darryl in the lurch.
  • I Let You Win: In the end, Darryl sees how much being a magician means to Irving and decides to forfeit.
  • Irony: For all of her disdain and disgust for close-up magic, Molly herself is revealed to be an extremely talented magician. Which makes sense here as she reveals that she learned close up magic purely to prevent herself from being deceived by magicians.
  • Jerkass Realization: Darryl feels bad when he learns that Irving genuinely loves doing magic, whereas he was only using it to make money.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: After all the magic tricks Darryl and Molly did, the latter tells the former to never speak of this again and somehow manages to float up into the air.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Both Molly and Irving show up as children at Darryl's birthday party gig to disrupt it. Darryl isn't fooled by either of them.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Molly does this after she begrudgingly reveals her skill as a magician to Darryl.
    Darryl: You know close-up magic?
Molly: (takes out a playing card from behind his ear) Know your enemy, Darryl. (blows on the card, turning it into a butterfly) Know. Your. Enemy.
    • She does it again at the end of the episode when Darryl toys with the idea of him and Molly going on tour with their magic act, which she is vehemently against.
  • Shout-Out: One of Irving's magic tricks is to bring a broom to life and have it carry buckets.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Irving's first condition for the magic showdown is that the loser has to leave Brighton for good. Darryl tells him his parents wouldn't allow that.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Done by Irving pulling out tied silks with a glove at the end to issue the magician's duel to Darryl.
