Recap / The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air S 2 E 9 Cased Up

Go To

Hilary finally meets the man Uncle Phil has wanted her to date, Eric (Malcolm-Jamal Warner). He is young, dashing, rich, and the things that Hilary is looking for in a man. All is going well until there is a small car accident caused by Will's new car. Since Will is underage and uninsured, Uncle Phil gets sued as he is the in loco parentis guardian of Will.

  • Actor Allusion: Eric is amused to see the whole family having a meal together, saying he thought that only happened on The Cosby Show. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, of course, is best known for playing Theo Huxtable.
  • Blind Without 'Em: How Phil wins against Eric's lawsuit, by getting Hillary to testify that Eric was driving without his glasses on.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Subverted by Eric. Eric claims the obnoxiously loud music from Will's car drowned out the sounds of Eric's horn, causing the crash. While Phil is able to debunk that claim by pointing out Eric wasn't wearing his glasses, Phil was rightfully impressed with Eric's ability to use such a small detail in his favor.
  • Get Out!: Jazz gets thrown out of the house the first time as he was visiting late at night with Will. The second time? He gets thrown into the house after it's revealed he sold Will a car with no insurance.
  • Got Me Doing It: Eric accidentally calls his car a "Honeywagon" like Will called his all episode.
  • Graceful Loser: Eric takes losing the court case very well, even commending Phil on his work.
  • Nice Guy: Eric, though he plays it up to earn favor with Phillip Banks, is still very affable. He's initially hesitant to sue Will despite not knowing him very well, takes losing the case in stride, and forgives Will in the end.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: Eric, even more so than Carlton.
  • Right Behind Me: Will admits to crashing his car without insurance to Carlton and says he'll say that to Uncle Phil's face right as he walks in behind him. Carlton, with a smug grin, says "Oh hi dad". Will mocks Carlton for his unoriginal Look Behind You joke, and bumps into Uncle Phil.
Will: I sure hope Luther Vandross is in the house.
