Recap / The Expanse S 06 E 02 Azure Dragon

Go To

Bobbie joins the Rocinante crew to capture the Free Navy spotter ship Azure Dragon and steal its data on the asteroid attacks.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Naomi tells Holden that her failing to jump was "nothing". Seeing right through her, he asks if it was really nothing or "talk about it later" nothing, and Naomi reluctantly confirms the latter.
  • Boom, Headshot!: The pilot of the Azure Dragon dies this way, cut off in the middle of trying to wipe the ship's drives.
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out: Done in a subtle way. Holden chews out Clarissa for suddenly changing the plan by going in Naomi's place, as things nearly went south because she lacks Naomi's experience working on ship engines, but the broader point is to acknowledge her as a member of the crew, not merely Amos's tag-along. Amos is confused by her happy reaction at first, until she explains that this is the first time he's called her a part of the crew.
  • EMP: A short-range EMP is used to knock out the Azure Dragon's power systems long enough for the Roci crew to board and disable the engines completely.
  • From Bad to Worse: The episode starts with the little Laconian girl from the previous episode, Cara, running in a panic through the forest cradling a local bird-like creature, which dies when she gets it back to her family's shelter. It turns out Cara fed it some of her protein bar, which poisoned it due to the incompatible biochemistries. She tries to make amends by stealing a small drone belonging to her parents to help its babies back into the nest and care for them, only to fly the drone into a tree and smash it after getting just one back. And then, to her further horror, the dead bird is grabbed and eaten by another animal she had befriended, meaning it will likely be poisoned and could also die.
  • Graceful Loser: Marco takes his asteroid operation being busted up in stride, as it was bound to happen eventually and it means he gets to engage Earth and Mars directly, putting him back in his element.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Bobbie shows up during the Roci's resupply to join Holden in the mission to stop the Azure Dragon. However, her mission is to take the ship and its data intact, which means Holden can't risk firing on the ship for fear of destroying it, making their mission a great deal more difficult.
  • No Biochemical Barriers: Averted on Laconia. Other than a breathable atmosphere, Laconian and human life are totally incompatible. The local wildlife gets poisoned by human food, and the humans likewise can't eat any of the native flora or fauna.
  • Pet the Dog: Holden has Clarissa lie low when the UNN special envoy boards, just in case her status as a wanted felon is an issue and defends her place on the ship to Bobbie once Amos introduces her.
  • Tempting Fate: Bobbie assumes that the Azure Dragon, both unarmed and with limited crew, will be no match for her Powered Armor once she manages to board. She's proven wrong when one of them comes out packing a bazooka that could have cracked her suit like an egg, if not for Clarissa using her mods to quickly take the guy out before he can fire.
  • Trauma Button: When she's about to jump to the Azure Dragon, Naomi freezes up, remembering what she went through to escape the Free Navy last season. Clarissa quickly takes over and Naomi heads back to the bridge to assist over comms.
  • Weaponized Exhaust: With no defensive weapons, the Azure Dragon resorts to trying to blast the Roci with its exhaust plume whenever the latter gets close enough. The hull is superheated by the plume each time, but it's tough enough that the attempts otherwise cause no harm. Against an unarmored civilian ship, it probably would have worked.
