Chapter 31: The Mad Nadder
Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:
- Bad Boss: Its established that as the Red Death's influence has expanded and its hunger growing by the day, all of the other dragons are being starved.
- Cargo Ship: Played for Laughs. When she considers discarding her axe to help train the Nadder, Astrid starts shedding tears."Forgive me... my love..."
- Rage Breaking Point: Before going through with her plan to train a dragon, Astrid pauses and wonders if she should. She then remembers that, with Stoick and Gobber in shut-down mode, Spitelout and Snotlout have become the village leaders. This fact is enough to make her go through with her plan.
- The Reveal: It's revealed here that with Toothless gone from the nest, the amount of food looted had gone down, hence why Red Death sends the dragons on more frequent raids to compensate.
- Violence Is Not an Option: At first Astrid refuses to take the manual's advice, thinking that going after a dragon without a weapon is suicide. When the excitable Nadder refuses to cooperate, it isn't until she decides to take Hiccup's instructions seriously does she make any progress.
