Chapter 21: Hiccup Found

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • All Periods Are PMS: When Hiccup describes Berk's abysmal weather, Camilo compares it to when his mother is on her period. He gets a smack upside the head for it.
  • Call-Back: When Mirabel first asked Hiccup about his family on his second day in the Encanto, he told her that he didn't have one. Hence, she looks confused when he begins talking about Stoick. Hiccup wasn't lying, however: Stoick disowned him, so Hiccup can't really call him his father anymore.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Alma did put her family under pressures to appear "perfect", she and her triplets are all fairly good with kids, and would never dream of disowning a member of the family (Bruno, though he did disappear for ten years, was still acknowledged as a member of the family). Mirabel and her parents look like they're out for blood when they learn about what Stoick did to Hiccup.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Hiccup reveals that unlike in canon, his friendship with Toothless was discovered sooner, thus he never learned about the Red Death and he had to fly on a Nadder to rescue Toothless from a public execution.
  • Internal Reveal: Hiccup's backstory is revealed to the Madrigal family (with the fact that Stoick disowned him infuriating Mirabel and her parents, and his status as a walking disaster resonating with Bruno).
  • Klatchian Coffee: Hiccup decides to try coffee for the first time. He decides to stop after one sip because it immediately spikes him with energy.
  • Shipper on Deck: Mirabel already assumes Bruno will marry Valentina.
Mirabel: Antonio and Toothless are nuts about each other! And are you really gonna quit Luisa's book club after only one meeting? And I know you'll miss my mama's cooking! And I know you'd feel horrible about missing Tio Bruno's wedding!
Bruno: Woah, hey, wedding? But we're not even-
  • Symbolism: Toothless' new tailfin is covered in embroidered symbols that not only represent Hiccup and Mirabel, but every current member of the Madrigal family (a candle for Alma, an arepa for Julieta, a bee for Agustin, a sun for Pepa, an umbrella for Felix, an hourglass for Bruno, soundwaves for Dolores, a flower for Isabella, a weight for Luisa, a chameleon for Camilo, and a paw-print for Antonio).
  • Title Drop: The new tailfin that Mirabel makes is covered in embroidered symbols, each one corresponding to a member of the Madrigal family...with Hiccup being represented by a dragon and Mirabel by a butterfly.
  • The Un-Reveal: When Hiccup presents his theory why dragons raid Berk, Antonio almost tells him about the Red Death before Pepa shushes him for interrupting.
  • Wham Episode: Hiccup decides to stay when the Madrigals ask.
