Chapter 1: Rude Awakening

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Acting Unnatural: Hiccup's "casual" walk when he reaches the town ends up being "a gait more akin to a long-legged waddle."
  • Children Are Innocent: When Antonio happens upon Toothless, he assumes he's a giant puppy. If Toothless wasn't so tame, this would have ended badly.
  • Eyes Never Lie: When Hiccup and Mirabel meet for the first time, they see "pain of rejection and great inner turmoil... kindness, ingenuity, and unwavering determination" in each other's eyes.
  • Gossipy Hens: Encanto is such a Close-Knit Community, it doesn't take long before everyone realizes that there is an outsider wandering around, half of them mishearing and thinking he's an "invader". The fact that Dolores hears everything that happens just exacerbates this.
  • Mythology Gag: The village discovering Toothless is word-for-word a lot like how Astrid discovered him in How to Train Your Dragon.
Hiccup: He wasn't gonna hurt you, you scared him!
    Luisa: I scared HIM?
  • Older Than They Look: When Hiccup encounters Luisa, she asks him where his parents are (since his scrawniness is only more pronounced compared to her), only for Hiccup to tell her that he's fifteen.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Since the Encanto sits within an impassable mountain-scape, they don't necessarily get outsiders very often, leaving Hiccup to stick out like a sore thumb. Since he isn't doing anything that warrants panic, he mostly just draws a few eyes and the Madrigals don't get involved until Toothless is discovered.
