Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 5 E 25 A Day In The Life Of Alan Brady

Go To

Alan Brady plans a visit to the Petrie house for a documentary to show America a heavily whitewashed version of his day. Unfortunately, Laura scheduled Jerry and Millie's anniversary party for the same day. Alan's overbearing egomania strikes again when he muscles his way into the party. With the guests being wound up with excitement and Alan making demands, it promises to be the craziest party the Helpers have ever attended.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Alan can't be bothered to get any of his "friends'" names right.
  • The Alcoholic: Cousin Hi often appears next to the bar or with a drink in hand. By the end of the party, he's so drunk that the filming crew has to prop him into a semi-upright position.
  • All Part of the Show: The documentary goes off the rails when a jealous husband punches Alan for encouraging his wife's attentions. However, Alan plays it off as a skit for the party.
  • Brick Joke: Millie buys a dress for her niece Cynthia to wear while doing a dance for the party. Rob and Laura think Alan would dislike the distraction from him. However, when Alan gets knocked down, Cynthia seizes the opportunity to do her dance (a ballet number) anyway.
  • Catchphrase: Cousin Hi (an alcoholic) says, "I'll drink to that."
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Despite Millie's remark that Hi and Blanche separate every few years, he's crazy enough about his flirtatious wife to punch TV star Alan Brady when he goes along with her advances.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Millie considers Alan Brady a "rat" because he called Jerry "dumbo" when he finished an old joke Alan was telling. She insists that only she can call Jerry that. Of course, this doesn't stop her from wanting him at the party when it turns out the event will be televised.
  • Interclass Friendship: Alan invites himself to the Helpers' anniversary party because he wants to show America that he has friends among the common folk. Of course, he barely even knows anyone there.
  • Might Makes Right: Alan forces everyone to accept his demands for the party (which isn't even his party) because of the power and influence he wields as a TV star (especially over Rob). When Laura tells Rob that he doesn't have the right, Rob tells her that according to Alan, might makes right.
  • No, You: Noticing Buddy's makeup, Mel asks incredulously if he's wearing lipstick. When Buddy answers defensively that he has a blemish, Mel retorts that Buddy is a blemish.
  • Photo Op with the Dog: Alan wants to come over to the Petrie's house to show that he's on good terms with "the little people." When he invites himself to the Helpers' party, he makes it all about how he likes being with his "friends" and they all adore him...no matter how many reshoots they have to do.
  • Shout-Out: Discussing how awful he expects the party will be, Rob compares it to Godzilla eating Tokyo.
