Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 3 E 5 All About Eavesdropping

Go To

While waiting for Laura to finish preparing to go to a party, Rob activates Ritchie's radio and discovers that he and the Helpers' son have hooked up a cross-the-street connection. The fun of eavesdropping disappears when the Petries hear Millie and Jerry saying negative things about them, and the party quickly goes downhill.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Millie tries to involve Rob and Laura in the charades game, and Laura says coolly that it's their house. Buddy asks if they didn't give them the house, and Sally punches him in the shoulder.
  • Bewildering Punishment: Not knowing that Rob and Laura eavesdropped on them while they were saying some negative things, Jerry and Millie are utterly confused when they come over and behave stiffly and coldly. They become even more confused during charades when Laura makes some hostile gestures and Rob gives some bizarre guesses. Neither of them come close to guessing what it was.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Rob and Laura leave the wine they were planning to give the Helpers at home after getting angry. After they decide to make up, Rob picks up the wine, saying they'll need something to wash down the crow.
    • While debating why Rob and Laura are late, Sally tells Buddy that they don't fight; at most, they kiss hard. When Rob and Laura come over extremely cold, someone suggests Rob kissed Laura too hard.
    • Rob and Laura frostily note that a number of the Helpers' furnishings were gifts from them. Later, when Laura says that it's Millie and Jerry's house (so it's their prerogative if they want to play charades), Buddy asks if they didn't give the house to the couple as well.
  • Happily Married: Sally lampshades the positivity of Rob and Laura's relationship while the party members are trying to guess why they haven't arrived at the Helpers' house yet.
Buddy: Maybe they had a fist fight?
Sally: Rob and Laura? The worst they do is kiss hard.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: At one point, Rob and Laura button up "Millie" and "Jerry" into "Mildred" and "Gerald."
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Laura keeps insisting that Rob shouldn't be listening in and telling him to turn it off...until Jerry says that the avocado/peanut-butter dip (made with Laura's recipe) tastes "drab."
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title references All About Eve.
  • Shout-Out: While going next door, Rob calls Jerry and Millie "Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde."
  • Would Rather Suffer: While they're trying to get Rob and Laura interested in a game, Sally sarcastically says that they couldn't possibly have more fun than they're having right now. Buddy pipes up that the only thing more fun would be having an impacted wisdom tooth.
