Recap / The Crown S 6 E 3 Dis Moi Oui

Go To

I don't really understand how I ended up here.

Diana decides to return to London. Mohamed tells Dodi that if he marries Diana, he will make Dodi an equal partner in his company. At Monte Carlo, Diana and Dodi continue to be pursued by paparazzi. They enter a jewellery shop for refuge; Dodi asks if there's something she likes, and she points out a ring. They prepare to return to London, but Dodi plans a stop at Paris. At Balmoral, Prince William shoots his first stag. Diana and Dodi continue to be pursued by paparazzi in Paris; Diana is stunned when Mohamed offers her Villa Windsor. Diana and Dodi stay at the Ritz; while on a phone call with William and Harry, William asks Diana if she will marry Dodi, who proposes to Diana with the ring, but she replies that she is not ready. They diagnose each other's problems: Dodi tells her she needs to slow down, and Diana says he needs to get away from Mohamed. Dodi decides to return to his apartment; he, Diana and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones get into a car at the hotel's rear, driven by hotel employee Henri Paul. Pursued by paparazzi, the car crashes offscreen.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Diana finds her sons' nickname for Dodi amusing.
  • Artistic License – Geography: Diana and Dodi ostensibly head to Monte Carlo for an evening out. However, the graffiti on the walls and the pop-up street betting games both signify that this is not the scrupulously clean and well-ordered Principality of Monaco, where paparazzi-type press photographers are simply not allowed. The police would not only put a stop to their actions, but would also be quick to disperse the screaming crowd that chases Diana and Dodi into a jeweller's.
  • Artistic Licence – History: As far as is known, Dodi Fayed did not propose to Diana while they were in Paris (in this episode, he actually doesn't as she cuts him off before he can pop the question, but he gets down one knee with a ring, so the intent is clearly there). He is, however, known to have purchased a ring from a jeweller's in Paris on the afternoon of the crash, and a ring was later recovered from his room at the Ritz — leading to the logical assumption that if he had proposed (and it's a big 'if'), she refused.
  • Drunk Driver: Henri Paul (who was in fact the deputy head of security at the Ritz, as opposed to a mere chauffeur). Very much Truth in Television — blood tests done after the crash revealed that he was three times over the French limit.
  • A God Am I: Invoked by the fact that Mohamed Fayed has a portrait of himself as an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh.
  • Hope Spot: Dodi has a brief one before that fatal car journey when he confesses to Diana that he lied about standing up to his father. He promises that he will actually do so, and seems to mean it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Mohamed Fayed again. Sensing that Dodi is wavering over getting Diana to marry him, he promises to make Dodi an equal partner in all of his business interests if he can get her to say yes. He also arranges for his driver to take Diana to Villa Windsor when she arrives in Paris, even though he's not actually there — he just wants her to see it before he tells her (over the phone) that he'll give it to her and Dodi if they marry. This also ensures that she spends more time with Dodi when she just wants to go back to London.
  • The Nicknamer: William and Harry refer to Dodi as "The Poser", probably because they realise that the guy is trying way too hard to romance their mother. Plus, he wears mocassins.
  • Paparazzi: They go to great lengths in pursuit of photographs of Diana, and are chasing the car on mopeds at the time of the crash.
  • Phoney Call: Dodi speaks with his father on the phone before hanging up without Diana noticing, and then pretending to tell Mohamed that they're not going to marry, and he should back off. He later admits this to Diana and plans to speak to his father for real, but is unable to on account of the car crash.
  • Rite of Passage: William hunts and kills his first stag. Diana, no stranger to stag hunting herself note , finds this upsetting; YMMV as to whether this is because she doesn't like hunting any more, or because it is clear evidence that her boy is growing up.
  • Story Arc: At the end of the episode, we return to the Parisian dog-walker seen in the Cold Opening of "Persona Non Grata".
  • Title Drop: Dis-moi oui, French for "tell me yes" is the name of the diamond ring Dodi buys. The name is mentioned a couple of times. In Real Life, a ring bearing that inscription was recovered from Dodi's room at the Ritz after the crash.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Both Fayeds — Mohamed for ensuring that Diana doesn't get to fly straight back to London as she had originally planned, and Dodi for insisting that he and Diana travel back to his apartment rather than just stay at the Ritz.
  • Woman Scorned: Dodi mentions that Kelly is filing a lawsuit against him for breach of contract as he had got her to give up her job (modelling) to prioritise their relationship. In Real Life, she dropped the lawsuit after Dodi's death, and the Fayed family denied that she and Dodi had ever been engaged.
  • Women Are Wiser: Diana understands the Fayed family's dynamic much better than Dodi, and coaches him in terms of what to say to his father when he realises that he needs to put his foot down.
