Go To

Because I said so.

Diana dies from the accident, along with Dodi and Henri Paul. Mohamed Fayed travels to Paris to retrieve Dodi's body. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Prince Charles learn of Diana's death; Charles breaks the news to William and Harry. Mohamed returns Diana's possessions to the royal family and writes to them. Charles flies to Paris to accompany Diana's coffin back to the UK; he has a vision of Diana and expresses regret. Back at Balmoral, Charles tells the Queen and Prince Philip of the reactions he witnessed and pushes for a more public response. Mohamed lays Dodi to rest; he learns that the palace did not respond to his letters. Mohamed has a vision of Dodi, in which each regrets the mistakes of the other. William leaves Balmoral without informing anyone and returns fourteen hours later. The royal family faces a public backlash at its muted response. The Queen has a vision of Diana: she agrees to a ceremonial funeral for Diana and to travel to London. Princes Philip, Charles, William, and Harry, and Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, walk behind the funeral procession, and Queen Elizabeth delivers an address on television.

Tropes:

  • Artistic Licence – History: A few examples:
    • By all accounts, Charles did not go into the room containing Diana's body alone; instead, he went in with her sisters. No eyewitnesses ever reported him as having cried so loudly that it could be heard in the corridor outside, although it was noted that he was red-eyed when he came out of the room.
    • Rather than running away for fourteen hours in the aftermath of his mother's death, Prince William actually went for a few long, solitary walks around the 50,000-acre Balmoral estate although he wasn't gone for long enough for people to start worrying.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: Of a sorts with Charles, as he is so grief-stricken by the death of Diana and when speaking to her spirit he emphasizes that all he feels is guilt with Diana gently telling him it will pass in time.
  • Magic Realism: Visions of Dodi and Diana appear to their loved ones without a single word from the others of anything supernatural occurring. The visions can be interpreted as either ghosts, memories, or the imaginings of what they would have said if they'd been able to posthumously comment.
  • Selective Memory: Mohamed Fayed becomes convinced that Diana and Dodi were going to marry had they not been tragically killed in the accident. Truth in Television, as he made such claims in Real Life.
  • Wham Episode: After three episodes of build-up, Diana dies as a result of the car crash, and the royal family has to deal with the, well, aftermath.
