Recap / The Boondocks S 4 E 3 Breaking Granddad

Go To

Huey is in the garage testing chemistry when Robert and Riley barge in, despite the former putting a huge "Granddad Keep Out" sign on the door. Robert accuses Huey of trying to make a bomb, to which he vehemently denies, insisting that it's just a hair gel, of which he was "thinking of the Billy Dee look". Robert accepts it and leaves him alone, but tells him and Riley that they must accompany him to their financial advisor. After the trip, Riley goes into work , where Ruckus keeps him until closing, which frustrates him as he has a date that night. When he returns home, he takes some of Huey's gel and relaxes his hair, but his date declines once she learns of his financial status. Upset, Robert goes to sleep, only to wake up with beautiful, long straight hair. He decides to share the joy with Tom and Jazmine, who similarly gain luscious straight hair from using the product. Huey disapproves of them using the product as it really was an explosive product Huey planned to assassinate Ed Wuncler Jr. with.

  • How We Got Here: True to its inspiration, most of the episode is spent leading up to how we got to the Freemans and two unconscious gangsters driving madly in an RV through the desert.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Jazmine calls herself "the most beautiful girl in the world" while checking out her straightened floor length hair in the mirror.
  • Made of Explodium: The "hair gel" Huey was making is designed to kill Ed Wuncler II with an explosion.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Robert actually uses the belt on Huey for once, as he finds out the hair gel was actually an explosive assassination attempt on Ed II's life. Well…he tries to at least.
  • Punny Name: Breaking Bad + Granddad.
  • Shout-Out: Aside from the obvious, Huey's insistence that he's just making a hair gel to give himself "the Billy Dee look" is yet another nod to Aaron McGruder's love for Star Wars, of which Billy Dee plays Lando Calrissian.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Of Breaking Bad, particularly the pilot.
