Recap / The Americans S 5 E 13 The Soviet Division

Go To

When Philip and Elizabeth get to Alexei and Evgheniya's home, and Alexei and Evgheniya invite them in (after just coming home), they discover Pascha unconscious and bleeding. Philip calls 911, and the paramedics manage to save Pascha. Guilt-ridden, Evgheniya promises to take Pascha back to the Soviet Union, but Alexei is too afraid to go back. Elizabeth and Philip aren't happy with how things turned out, and tell Claudia to ask the Centre to make sure Alexei can go back to the Soviet Union with his family without any repercussions, but Claudia isn't convinced. Elizabeth (and Philip) and Tuan also argue with each other over how the mission was handled - with Elizabeth and Phillip offering to help Tuan save face in their report while Tuan is highly critical of the couple. Elizabeth and Philip also continue to talk about going back to the Soviet Union - even going as far as telling Henry he's not going to get to go to St. Edward's after all - but when Philip gets a tape from Kimmy's father that indicates the father's been promoted to head of the Soviet division at the CIA, Elizabeth can't bring herself to leave. She does, however, tell Philip he should quit, and she can take over doing their job on her own.

Renee moves in with Stan, and he confesses to her he wants to leave the counter-intelligence division of the FBI, because he doesn't like what he's doing anymore, though Renee points out he's the one who stands up for what's right there.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth and Paige continue training, and Martha finally gets the baby she's always wanted.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Brutal Honesty: Elizabeth and Tuan do this to each other - Tuan when he tells Elizabeth she and Philip aren't cut out for the work because they're too sentimental about things like Pascha's fake suicide attempt, while Elizabeth tells Tuan he isn't cut out for their line of work, period, not least of which because he insists on working by himself.
  • Historical Domain Character: Paige is watching the news on TV at one point when the story of Ronald Reagan's infamous "We begin bombing in five minutes" speech comes on.
  • It's All My Fault: Evgheniya blames herself for Pascha attempting to kill himself.
  • Lie Detector: Gennadi passes the polygraph test Stan and Aderholt give him.
  • Put on a Bus: This is the last we see of Pastor Tim and Alice (though Pastor Tim does return briefly in Season 6), as well as Martha.
  • Shout-Out: Elizabeth is reading Space, by James Michener, at one point.
    • Elton John's title track of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road plays during the scene where Philip, Stan and Renee are at the racquetball court and while Paige walks to the parking lot where Elizabeth and her got attacked by the muggers.
    • R.E.M.'s "South Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" plays at the party Kimmy is having at her house.
  • Worth It: When Tuan apologizes to Pascha for putting him at risk, Pascha shrugs it off, saying he got what he wanted by going back to the Soviet Union.
