Recap / The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You Ch 034

Go To

Rentarou introduces Iku to the rest of the harem, with Iku feeling out of place among beautiful women and cute girls. After the others reassure her that she'll be able to get along with everyone just fine, Rentarou explains the situation with the girls' baseball club. Karane proposes that Hahari could pull a few strings as chairwoman, but the latter refuses, saying she'd have to give other clubs special treatment to avoid playing favorites. Rentarou promises to oversee the girls if they choose to help out, and everyone agrees to join, with Hahari, Kurumi, and Mei providing moral support. Since the club lacks a proper coach, Iku asks Rentarou to serve as a coach for the training since he knows his girlfriends inside and out.

The girls start out by practicing throwing and catching a ball. Kusuri tries to play with two catching gloves at once, Karane is nonplussed about Hahari's bouncing busts, Nano's throwing is overly efficient, Kurumi gets reminded of chocolate baseball candies, and Shizuka proves weak at throwing the ball.

Next, they practice using a bat. Kusuri tries to use three at the same time, Karane holds it like a club, Kurumi thinks it's a novelty chocolate bat, and Shizuka gets spun around when she swings the bat due to the centrifugal force.

By the end of the day, nearly everyone is exhausted from practicing, but Iku decides to stay behind for some extra practice. The next morning, as the aching girls make their way to school, they discover that Iku had practiced for the entire night. Rentarou and the girls rushes the collapsed Iku to the infirmary, where they wonder just how far she's willing to push herself. When Iku regains consciousness, she tries to make her way back to the field to continue practicing, only to be stopped by Rentarou, who has been checking on her as much as possible throughout the day.

After the next round of practice, Iku attempts to send Rentarou and the girls off while she continues practicing on her own, only for Rentarou to strip down to a loincloth and the girls to insist on staying with Iku. Hahari heard Iku telling Rentarou about her determination to safeguard her club and told the other girls about it, and everyone decided to do what they could to prevent Iku from overworking herself in her efforts to save the club.

Tropes:

  • Cool, but Inefficient: Nano and Kusuri almost mention this trope word for word when talking about the latter spinning her arm to throw a baseball.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • After being called out for using three bats at once, Kusuri can be seen performing Zoro's "Oni Giri" in the next panel.
    • When Iku tries to leave the infirmary to continue practicing, Hahari can be seen hiding under her bed.
  • Ironic Echo: Kurumi and Hakari are paired off to throw and catch, and when Kurumi's pitch hits Hakari in the chest, she yells at her, "How exactly are you catching it?!" Hakari throws it back and it lands on the ground, and Kurumi becomes reminded of the chocolate baseballs she used to eat as a kid, getting her so hungry that she lies on the ground and bites into the baseball, causing Hakari to retort the same thing.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: At the end of the chapter, Rentarou strips down to nothing but a loincloth in order to give encouragement to Iku during baseball practice. Everyone else is stunned, and then the next chapter starts with everyone at the game and Rentarou fully dressed, as if the incident had never happened.
  • Offscreen Inertia: Iku's utter obsession with Training from Hell is shown to its fullest extent when, after the rest of the group heads home on account of it getting dark, she tells them that she's hanging back and getting a few more practice swings in. They think nothing of it, but when they arrive back at school the next day, they find her still on the baseball field swinging the bat around, and counting in the hundred thousands. She was there all night like it was nothing.
  • Rule of Cool: Kusuri tries to play catch with two gloves and use three bats at once, justifying it with the inherent coolness when questioned.
  • Shout-Out: Kusuri tries to use three baseball bats at once, holding one in her mouth, like Zoro.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Karane asks whether Hahari can just exert her authority as chairwoman of the school to keep Iku's baseball team open despite it having only one member. In a rare act of maturity and responsible behavior, Hahari refuses to give the club any special treatment, because if she were to make an exception for one club, she would have to do so for every club in order to avoid playing favorites.
  • Tomboy Angst: Upon being introduced to the rest of the family, Iku notes that the others are very pretty and worries that she won't fit in, given that she's not very ladylike. The others reassure her that her boyish charm is a breath of fresh air.
