Due to Simon being utterly depressed, he is unable to use Lagann so it ends up in a garbage heap. As a result He uses his drill to make busts of Kamina.
Receiving an S.O.S. from a village populated by beautiful girls under attack by beastmen, Kittan, as the leader,decides to lead Team Dai Gurren to save the village. After driving away a group of enemy Gunmen, Team Dai Gurren, expecting gratitude, ends up being captured by Guame's forces instead. Guame's troops find Nia with Simon. As they take Nia away, she tells Simon that since he can never be Kamina, he should be himself.
Locked up to be executed, the Team Dai Gurren members try to break out to no avail. However, Simon uses his drill key, slow but steady, reminding Yoko of how Kamina was encouraged by Simon's steady drilling. Simon's drill key glows, enabling him to operate Lagann again to rescue Nia from Guame's clutches.
Forming Gurren Lagann, Simon, no longer timid nor morose but burning with newfound confidence, emerges from the cockpit to proclaim that he is not Kamina but himself: Simon the Digger! With that, Gurren Lagann manages to destroy Guame's Gunmen Gember (Guame escapes, though).
After this victory, Kittan decides to let Simon be the leader.
