Recap / Team 8 Chapter 7 "First Blood"

Go To

"When the Kyuubi attacked, it was like a natural disaster. It was unstoppable. I was miles away from the battle and I could still feel... it. More chakra and killing intent than I'd ever imagined was possible to exist. I'd never been more afraid in my life, and I imagine that was true for everyone else in Konoha. Then it was defeated, but at the cost of the Yondaime's life. It's hard explain how much we all loved the Fourth Hokage, but I think any one of us would have given their lives in his place, were it possible. But then he was gone, and so was the demon responsible for his death. Everyone was angry and grieving for the Hokage and everyone else who'd died... and there was no real outlet for that grief and rage."
Kurenai

Short version

The team's patrol encounters a group of Earth Shinobi, who panic and retreat when they see Naruto's resemblance to the Yondaime, and then a group of missing-nin who have kidnapped Hanabi Hyūga and Konohamaru Sarutobi; the kidnappers initially have the upper hand, but Naruto becomes enraged and draws on the Kyuubi's chakra, overpowering and killing them. Several clan heads arrive and retrieve the heirs, with Aburame Shibi praising Shino and granting him a second kikaichu colony, while Hiashi Hyūga takes the opportunity to spurn and humiliate Hinata before leaving.

Longer version

The team begin their patrol mission a couple miles within the border. While Hinata and Shino practice sparring, Naruto asks Kurenai why she welcomes his questions so much. Kurenai asserts that this is normal behavior for a teacher. She explains that the villagers are grieved over the death of their beloved leader, and their misery had an outlet in Naruto. They infer that his teachers wanted him to fail, but Kurenai assures him she will help him learn better.

The team continue their patrols leaping through trees. Kurenai also instructs Naruto more properly in the body substitution jutsu, and teaches the genin the Doton: Wana, an Earth Release jutsu that can trap an enemy's feet with the ground.

In their mission's second week, Hinata detects a shinobi who crossed the border. Following the intruder, the team encounters four Earth shinobi standing across the border, who are clearly eager for trouble. When they notice Naruto, they turn hostile, and Kurenai has her team retreat. Kurenai determines that they recognized Naruto's resemblence to the Fourth Hokage, and were unnerved. She explains that Minato fought in the war between Konoha and Iwagakure, and lost his student Obito Uchiha. In response, Minato led attacks that wiped out over half of Iwa's shinobi. Naruto is shocked by the grave body count. Shino reveals that he planted female kikai bugs, so that his kikai can sense when they return.

During a patrol, Hinata senses and pursues three shinobi, and her team follows. They clash with the three missing-nin, who consist of the leader named Kazuyo who can turn his skin to metal, a Fire Release user named Kouro, and an Ice Release user named Lisuke. Hinata reveals they have kidnapped Hanabi Hyuuga & Konohamaru Sarutobi, and manages to rescue the former; Naruto and Kurenai retrieve the latter. During the conflict, Konohamaru desperately warns Naruto that the leader killed Iruka. This, combined with Hinata and Shino being struck unconscious and Kouro threatening to murder Kurenai and Hinata, causes Naruto to unleash the power of the Nine-Tails. With it, Naruto kills Kouro and Kazuyo. Kurenai fights and kills Lisuke.

The Nine-Tails' chakra dissipates. Kurenai explains that the Jinchuriki seal was designed to allow some of the fox's chakra mix with Naruto's, and was drawn on when Naruto was distressed. Naruto meets with Konohamaru and Hanabi, and is surprised to see the latter coldly unconcerned for her sister. Hinata awakens uncrippled, while Shino recovers with a burned arm and depleted kikaichu. Hinata explains to Kurenai that she pursued the enemy ninja quickly to prevent them from crossing the border. The group returns to camp. Naruto washes the blood off himself, and explains the use of his training weights to Konohamaru and Hanabi.

Team Gai, Tsume Inuzuka, Hiashi Hyuuga, Shibi Aburame, and several ANBU arrive on the scene, searching for Konohamaru and Hanabi. They are surprised to find Team 8 rescued them. Although the newcomers offer to replace them, Team 8 unanimously insists that they are to remain under the Hokage's orders. Shibi decides to replenish his son's kikaichu resources by transplanting a second colony to him. Might Gai reveals that Iruka actually survived.

Team Gai circuits the border zone while Shibi transfers a colony to his son. Naruto and Hinata discuss their respective concern for Iruka and Hanabi. In contrast with conventional shinobi teaching, they note how Kurenai encourages friendship among teammates. They decide to create a nin-do of caring for people, making their own ninja way. Konohamaru decides to follow suit. Hinata prepares a dinner for everyone, but Hiashi insists that they should leave to bring Hanabi and Konohamaru home. Shibi unenthusiastically agrees, and Hinata hastily gives Tenten, Lee, and Tsume food to go. After the visitors leave, Hinata's team finishes her dinner alone so she wouldn't be disappointed. The team turns in.

Tropes:

  • Chrome Champion: Kazuyo the Anvil, the stout leader of the ninja who kidnapped Konohamaru and Hanabi, can turn his skin to steel. With the Kyuubi's chakra, though, Naruto can punch right through steel.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Hanabi is quite ungrateful and cold to Hinata for rescuing her. Too bad for her, she's just pissed off the Third's grandson and one of the other ninja that saved her, Naruto, who proceeds to threaten her if she doesn't shut up.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Kurenai teaches her students the Doton: Wana (Earth Release: Snare) jutsu, which is performed by molding chakra and touching the ground to influence the earth around an enemy, to trap or slow their feet.
  • An Ice Person: Lisuke the Ice Knife, one of the ninja who kidnapped Konohamaru and Hanabi, can use Ice Release, and wields various weapons made of ice.
  • I'll Kill You!: Naruto declares exactly this to Kouro and his comrades as he unleashes the power of the Nine-Tails. And he proceeds to do just that.
  • Improvised Weapon: Naruto uses his training weights as projectiles by flinging them when he releases them.
  • Jack of All Trades: Kurenai's skill in ninjutsu is described as eclectic. She justifies this with her motto "there is no such thing as useless knowledge."
  • Oh, Crap!: Hanabi ridicules both Iruka and Hinata for having failed to defeat the ninja that kidnapped her and Konohamaru, even though both were seriously injured in the process. When Konohamaru yells at her, her immediate response is to flinch with surprise at the rebuttal.
  • Playing with Fire: Kouro the Flame, one of the enemy shinobi, is versed in a variety of Fire Release jutsu, and can even perform one without hand seals.
  • Red Baron: The Fourth Hokage, just as in canon, is still known (and feared) as "The Yellow Flash of Konoha." Kurenai reveals he killed over half of Iwagakure's forces. This fear is enough to unsettle Iwa shinobi when they see Naruto even resembles him.
