Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S2E9 "BeBe"

Go To

While Oscar is facing legal ramifications with his factory, BeBe is obsessed with jumping off high places. After an evaluation, Doctor Lord (voiced by Holly Robinson Peete) tells the family he has Autism, which Oscar refuses to believe.

Tropes include:

  • Animals Hate Him: The episode opens with zoo animals rallying against Oscar and his snack company, who had been selling them as animal feed. Trudy has to use her maiden name to go there for a veterinary job.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Proud Snacks gets shut down for good, but in the process, Oscar comes to terms with BeBe’s autism diagnosis and agrees to enroll him in Dr. Lord’s school for autistic kids.
  • Cerebus Call-Back: After frequently being tasked to watch her baby siblings throughout both shows, this episode clarifies that it's too much to keep asking Penny to be responsible for them and that she's become worn out from Oscar and Trudy always doing it to her. Even if she feels she shouldn't be resentful of her siblings, Dr. Lord acknowledges she's in a tough situation and Trudy comes to understand Penny shouldn't be held responsible for BeBe and CeCe's behavior or safety because she's not their parent.
  • End of an Age: After numerous jokes about the Proud Snacks company’s lack of profitability or edibility, this episode ends with the headquarters and factory finally getting shut down for good after an incident with BeBe shows off how unsafe the workplace really is.
  • F--: Proud Snacks unsurprisingly scored an F from its last safety inspection, though Oscar tried to disguise it as an A on his wall. Then after the next inspection backfires, the safety inspector adds a minus using his marker.
  • Hard Truth Aesop:
    • For Trudy, who is forced to admit that she shouldn't be making Penny responsible for looking after the twins. She might be their older sister, but she's not their parent, so she shouldn't be expected to act like it.
    • For Oscar, when he accepts his son for being different after an incident where his factory gets shut down permanently.
  • Heel Realization:
    • Shortly after BeBe’s autism diagnosis, Trudy realizes how unfair it is for Penny to be expected to watch after the twins all of the time, especially because BeBe will now need extra support that a middle schooler can’t provide.
    • Oscar eventually realizes this as well after Proud Snacks is shut down due him needing to watch BeBe.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Penny says this when BeBe disappears for the second time.
  • Parents as People: It's pointed out how Penny is frequently expected to be mindful of the twins just because she's their older sister. Penny confides in Dr. Lord that she's tired of her parents always doing that and how it will be even harder knowing BeBe is autistic because Oscar refuses to let him attend Dr. Lord's school. Trudy eventually realizes that they shouldn't make the twins Penny's responsibility because she doesn't deserve to have all that dumped on her.
  • Ship Tease: On her friends' trip to the museum, everyone currently not known to be in relationships gets paired up and goes to different exhibits for privacy with each other. Michael pairs with Sebastian (Makeup Boy), Maya with Billy Chang, LaCienega with KG, and Zoey with Myron.
  • Very Special Episode: This episode shows how important it is to properly care for autistic children.
  • Wham Episode: Despite Oscar’s attempts to save his business, Proud Snacks is finally shut down, leaving him currently unemployed.
