Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S1 E10 "Old Towne Road Part 1"

Go To

Trudy discovers online that Suga Mama has family in Oklahoma and they get invited to a family reunion for the Towne family, where Suga Mama butts heads with her father, Pa, and her brothers.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Due to the "To Be Continued" at the end, it’s ambiguous if Sista Spice's absence is due to having not yet arrived at the ranch and she will be appearing in the next season's premier or due to her having been retconned out. On yet another hand, she could have just passed since her appearance or is serving time for her scams.
  • Artistic License – Geography: Oklahoma is mostly grassland and not desert. This is done to give the setting a Wild West feel.
  • Celebrity Paradox: June Bug Towne is voiced by Lil Nas X and even plays "Old Town Road", the song he is known for. Earlier, Oscar mentioned he hates that very song, which means the real Lil Nas X also exists in this universe.
  • The Chain of Harm: Suga Mama's father is as unsupportive of her as she is of Oscar.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Suga Mama reminiscing on why she left her family.
  • Continuity Nod: Oscar mentions only knowing Ray Ray and his relatives from his father's side, who were last seen in "Behind Family Lines".
  • Contrived Coincidence: Trudy discovers that Suga Mama is from Oklahoma, right before she gets an invite from her family in Oklahoma.
  • Gene Hunting: The plot is initiated by Trudy researching her genealogy. Finding nothing when searching for Suga Mama leads her to do some digging into her real name, which directs her to Suga's family in Oklahoma.
  • Given Name Reveal: Suga Mama's birth name is finally revealed as Charlette Towne. It’s not hard to guess why she hasn’t gone by her birth name.
  • Historical Longevity Joke: Suga Mama isn't the only one on the receiving end of these jokes. Oscar jokes about how Bobby hasn't been back to school in 55 years, likely referencing Bobby's tendency to dress decades behind the era he's currently in.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Against anyone else, like Oscar and her brothers, Suga Mama makes a comeback when insulted. But at the end of the episode when her father puts her down with another of his sexist remarks, Suga Mama doesn't say anything, and instead walks away in tears, only telling Puff to follow her, showing how her father's sexist attitude has a long term effect on her.
    • Earlier, when the topic of her family is brought up and Oscar makes a disparaging joke about her, instead of reacting as she normally would, Suga Mama just coldly reiterates that she doesn’t want to talk about it, something that doesn’t go uncommented on by Bobby.
  • Out of Focus: While Dijonay and Zoey are absent, LaCienega and Penny’s boyfriend Kareem only have cameo appearances, and otherwise don’t feature in this episode.
  • Plot Hole: It's never revealed why Oscar's paternal relatives like his father and Ray-Ray were not shown in the search, despite being mentioned in the episode.
  • Practically Different Generations: Suga Mama's youngest brother Chuck is said to have been born after Suga Mama grew up.
  • Prodigal Family: Suga Mama is forced to confront her misogynistic father when her daughter-in-law discovers their existence and gets the Prouds invited to a family reunion. She ends the episode reminiscing about why she left her family behind.
  • Retcon: This is an episode that deals with Oscar's extended maternal family, but Suga Mama's telekinetic sister Spice is completely omitted to say she only has relatives at a ranch in Oklahoma.
  • Running Gag: For the first half, Trudy gives someone (mostly Oscar) a demonic Death Glare when they get sassy, which makes them scream in terror.
  • Season Finale: Season 1's last episode.
  • Status Quo Is God: Bobby’s last appearance had him move out and start a life with Lisa Hill. However, he’s back to living in the Proud household seeing as he’s now having to follow Trudy’s rules again.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Suga Mama apparently left home because her father refused to let her participate in the Towne Rodeo Championship because no girls are allowed. He tells her to go cook him a meal when she demonstrates high skill at bull riding.
  • Stealth Insult: Pa Towne compliments Suga Mama about how "she did one thing right" by having Oscar as a son. This compliment deliberately ignored any other talent Suga Mama may have possessed.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The Towne women all have features similar to a young Suga Mama, while the men all have the exact same jawline and furrowed brow she currently has.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: Suga Mama left because her family refused to let her participate in the rodeo championship, being disparaged hence as thinking she's better than everyone.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Oscar is brought to tears at experiencing love and support from his grandfather for his surprising skill at lassoing. And on his mother's side, no less.
