Recap / Superstore S 4 E 06 Maternity Leave

Go To

Maternity Leave is the sixth episode of Superstore's fourth season.

Amy just had her baby 2 days ago, but already has to go back to work, because her suspension disqualifies her for maternity leave. As a result, Glenn tells her that if she doesn't come back to work, he'll be forced to fire her. She spends the episode complaining about how post-pregnancy is affecting her body. Eventually, she snaps at Glenn. When she goes to his office to apologize and ask to use his office to pump milk, he instead sends her to a janitorial closet, where Sayid also goes to pray.

Meanwhile, after being skeptical of Glenn's seasonal help hiring choices, Jonah and Garrett decide to interview applicants themselves. The first interviewee (guest star, Eden Sher) is highly qualified, but incredibly annoying. However, after none of the subsequent interviewees are any better, they decide to hire her anyway, after she already accepted another job offer. But when a late, seemingly normal applicant shows up, they fire her and hire him instead. However, he ends up urinating in the middle of the floor.

Matteo and Cheyenne attempt to convince Amy to change her baby's name, who she named Parker.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Butt-Monkey: Sandra, as usual. Dina, who is still in the hospital after giving birth, forces her to carry around a tablet with a video call active so that she can work while still on bedrest.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Played for laughs. Cheyenne says that she wouldn't do something about a physically abusive mother, but she would want to do something. Mateo wheedles her into convincing Amy to change Parker's name in this way.
  • Call-Back:
    • Jonah and Garrett interview applicants at a table on a patch of fake grass, similar to where Jonah was interviewed in the pilot.
    • Also to the first season finale and second season premiere; it appears they were successful in their campaign to get maternity leave, but it only applies to employees who've been working there for a year. Unfortunately, Amy's suspension "reset the clock".
  • Genki Girl: Penny, played by Eden Sher, is very excitable and always makes jokes.
Jonah: You don't really have an off switch, do you, Penny?
  • Hope Spot: After interviewing many terrible candidates, Jonah and Garrett meet a guy who may finally make a good employee. After getting the job, he pisses on the floor.
  • Precious Puppies: Glenn tries to make up for his row with Amy with an adorable retriever puppy.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: Kimmer (with a K), doesn't "believe" in shoes.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Jonah and Garrett interview a bunch of terrible job applicants in this manner.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Cheyenne and Mateo have a negative reaction to Amy's son being named Parker.
