"Viral Video"

Amy is perplexed by Kelly's social media popularity and tries to outdo her; Glenn accuses Mateo of making up fake customers for the Cloud 9 rewards card.

Tropes:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Amy's rap video has a comment from Emma asking her to stop.
  • The Bet: Jonah bets Amy that she can't get a hundred people to view a video by the end of the day; loser cleans the rat traps.
  • Continuity Nod: Glenn goes to lunch with Mateo and recalls the last time he took an employee to lunch, which was his outing with Jonah in "Spring Cleaning." This serves as a plot point as he reveals he recognized Jonah's voice when he pretended to be Martin Nestle.
  • Everyone Can See It: Everyone who hears of Amy's attempts to make a viral video assumes it's because she's jealous that Jonah is dating Kelly, and are implied to be correct.
  • Forced Meme: Amy spends the episode trying to make a viral video as part of a bet with Jonah. She accomplishes this by making cringeworthy videos around the store and then begging everybody to watch them, even broadcasting them on the department's TV displays.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: On Amy's rap video that she posted to Instagram, you can see there's one comment from Emma that says "Mom please stop."
  • Funny Background Event: Amy takes a video in the bakery, and while she rants about the problems with viral videos, a bunch of rats crawl up behind her to eat the sweets. Jonah and Garrett watch the video and wonder when she'll notice the rats. (She doesn't). This is the video of hers that becomes popular... but it gets her in trouble with corporate for showcasing the rat problem in the store.
  • I Am Not Shazam: In-Universe, Dina wonders if the main character of Scandal is named Scandal. (She's not; it's Olivia Pope.)
  • The Internet Is for Porn: Dina only uses the internet for birdseed shopping and porn.
  • Line-of-Sight Alias: Mateo signs up a bunch of fake customers for the rewards card using brand names as surnames.
  • Outside Joke: Amy quickly realizes her joke for her first viral video ("Look, it's a 2-for-1 sale! How come you never see a 1-for-2 sale?") doesn't work when you actually think about it, because obviously nobody would pay twice as much for one item.
  • Shout-Out: Jonah refers to the fake voice he uses for Mateo's made-up customer as his "Audrey Two voice" from theater camp.
  • Wham Line: After a fake phone call from Jonah helps Mateo win an apology from Glenn for not believing him, Glenn takes him out to lunch. As they're starting the car, Glenn muses on the last time he was able to have lunch with an employee, where Glenn learned all about Jonah's background, his interests...and his voice. Then it becomes clear Glenn knows Mateo's secret and is just stringing Mateo along.
  • You're Just Jealous:
    • Jonah accuses Amy of being jealous that Kelly's videos are so popular.
    • Mateo claims Garrett's resentment about Mateo's fake customer scheme is just Garrett being jealous. Garrett admits he is jealous and not even hiding it.
