"Grand Reopening"

Two months after the store was hit by a tornado in the previous season's finale, the team returns for their first day of work back, only to discover that Glenn misinterpreted a letter from corporate and that the grand reopening is that afternoon and not next week. Amy and Jonah try to figure out where they stand with each other, Mateo tries to figure out where he stands with Jeff, and Garrett tries to figure out if he should offer to let Jonah stay with him so he can move out of his FEMA trailer.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax: The letter from corporate asked Glenn to get the staff back to get the store ready a week before the grand opening on the 28th. Glenn assumed the 28th was the week before the grand opening, but the 28th is actually the opening so the staff should have been brought in a week prior to that date. Amy admits it is worded a little vaguely.
Glenn: He could have said "The grand opening, which is on the 28th"! this makes it sound like the 28th is the start date!
Amy: (Reading) "Bring back the staff a week before the grand opening, on the 28th" Yeah, this is confusing.
  • Brick Joke: Early on, when Amy explains the need to get the store ready ASAP, Marcus suggests they stock one aisle, take a picture of it and put up life-sized copies of the picture over the other aisles. Near the end, a surprised customer runs straight into a life-sized picture of a stocked aisle.
  • The Cameo: Howie Mandel was hired by corporate to appear at the grand reopening. However, it was arranged by his appearance agent, not his performance agent, so he will not be performing any jokes. This also matches his level of involvement in the episode's story.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: A sentiment Amy and Jonah struggle with.
  • Reset Button: Marcus is back despite being laid off in the previous finale. There's no real explanation other than Jonah saying "Glad they hired you back," but presumably the two months of forced unpaid vacation caused some of the other staff to get other jobs and not return to Cloud 9, freeing up space in the budget to rehire everybody else.
  • Shout-Out: Amy and Jonah end up in Minions costumes.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Amy and Jonah's story completely revolves around this.
