Recap / Sue Thomas FB Eye S 3 E 13 False Profit

Go To

The FBI being assigned a kidnapping case turns into an investigation of the notorious cult Mindprophet and its leader Malcolm Hayden after it turns out that the "victim" was the daughter of the kidnappers, who had brought in a deprogrammer to try to reach her. Sue and Tara go undercover, only for the others to discover some disquieting news about two women who were planning to leave the group.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Character Tics: Myles points out Bobby's tic of drumming his fingers on the desk. The others mention some of their own or others': Sue clicks her pen, Lucy crumples an empty water bottle, Jack unwinds paper clips, etc. Myles himself insists he doesn't have any, but Lucy proves he does...by dipping one end of Myles' pen in ink so his face is soon covered by blotches from his habit of tapping it on his chin or forehead.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: Downplayed; the episode ends with the others joking at Myles' expense.
  • Godzilla Threshold: When Lily's parents are confronted about having her kidnapped, they say this wasn't their first choice; they tried to reach out to her by less extreme means, but thanks to the cult's manipulations, she wouldn't respond. They hired a deprogramming team as a last resort.
  • Hiding Behind Religion: Malcolm claims to be the leader of a new church that can help people shed their "false selves" and reach their destiny and has cried religious persecution to hinder investigations. It's pretty clear to Sue that he just enjoys the control he gets from having converts "submit" to him and sign over everything.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Lucy puts ink on Myles' pen so he'll put spots on his face when he taps the pen on it, leaving them proof of his having a quirk. Tara, in on the situation, asks the others if they want to go to lunch because she's "so hungry she could eat a spotted owl." Myles notices and comments on the alteration to the phrase, but he doesn't notice the joke on him that caused it.
  • Hurricane of Puns: The last few minutes are a string of "spot" references (e.g., "dappled horse", "Johnny on the spot") as the others joke about the oblivious Myles' ink-spotted face.
  • Kidnapped by an Ally: Lily's parents have her pulled into a van and brought to their house so that a deprogrammer can work on her and potentially free her mind from what Malcolm has been doing to her. It's deconstructed, given that the FBI points out that they have no choice but to treat it as a kidnapping, regardless of the motives. Luckily, it ends up thrown out the window when Lily loses faith in Malcolm.
  • Papa Wolf: Dmitrius, interrogating Lily's father, points out that legally, Lily is an adult and he had no right to take her back to the house for deprogramming against her will. The father asks if he has any children and questions whether he wouldn't do anything he had to in order to keep them safe.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title combines the phrase "false prophet" (which Malcolm is) and "profit".
  • Punk in the Trunk: Malcolm stuffs Sue in the trunk of his car after finding out that she doesn't buy into his mumbo-jumbo. However, Sue manages to break a tail-light and make contact with the outside world using a flashlight.
  • Shout-Out: While they're talking about Myles' habit of pointing out everyone's quirks, Lucy calls him "Felix." Bobby says "Felix" had better shut his mouth if he doesn't want "Oscar" to throw him into a trash heap.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: After luring her into admitting her clearheaded-ness and kidnapping her, Malcolm offers Sue a choice - submit to him and stay a part of Mindprophet, or be sold as a slave overseas like the other women who started questioning him.
