Chapter 20: Afternoon

At volleyball practice, Nanako isn't thinking about how a country girl can fit in at a sophisticated place like Shujin; how volleyball coach Suguru Kamoshida is big, muscular, attentive, and intimidating; her old volleyball team where she was spirit leader and defensive reserve; or how the Shujin team makes her a terrible player by comparison. The only thing on her mind is beating the sneer off Kamoshida's best female player, Shiho Suzui, who welcomed her to the team with disgust and condescension. Her best efforts aren't enough to win the practice game, and Shiho orders her not to come back.

Kamoshida consoles Nanako for the loss, praising how much effort she'd put in and promising to help her if she decides to stay. Nanako leaves and sees Shiho conversing with a beautiful blonde girl with pigtails [Ann Takamaki], and meets their stares with a friendly wave as she leaves.

Chapter 21: Evening

In her bedroom at Yu's apartment, a very sore Nanako reflects on Shiho's behavior and how nobody spoke up against it. She wonders what Ren would have done, thinking he may blackmail Shiho before realizing he'd just put on his glasses and fade into the background, knowing that the only time he'd broken the law was to save someone else. Stress, disappointment, and anxiety weigh on Shiho as she tries to figure out what to tell Ren and whether she had come to Tokyo for altruistic reasons or because of their kiss.
