Recap / Static Shock S 1 E 10 Winds Of Change

Go To

A bang baby named Slipstream, who can control the wind, uses his powers for food and destruction. Meanwhile, Virgil starts wanting to hang out with Daisy and resultantly spends less time with Richie, causing a rift between the two.

Winds of Change features the following tropes:

  • Fat Bastard: Heavy C, even before he became Slipstream, was a fat bully who stole other kids' food. After he discovered his powers, he immediately dons a costume and becomes a supervillain.
  • Friend Versus Lover: A very one-sided example. Richie's jealous that Virgil's spending more time with Daisy than him. Daisy, for her part, thinks they're both being stupid for letting it affect their friendship so much.
  • Foreshadowing: This episode is one of the first times that Richie actually tries facing a Bang Baby using his wits and one of his inventions. Later, as Gear, he'll take on all sorts of foes with those exact same tools much more effectively.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Virgil says "I'm a superhero, not a janitor" sourly after Richie calls him about "a guy making a mess" down at the water park. Richie quickly clarifies that it's "not that kind of mess, bro!"
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Richie's jealousy over Virgil spending time with Daisy is overblown, he's right that Virgil starts neglecting his training. He has a much harder time than he should fighting Slipstream.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Slipstream looks and talks a lot like Bill Cosby's Fat Albert.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Three kids that Heavy C was stealing food from in the beginning have apparently been victims of him before. Finally having enough of him, they gang up on him and easily defeat him, telling him they aren't scared of him anymore and his "free meals" are over. Unfortunately, they discover he is a Bang Baby immediately after this and run for it.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Happens between Virgil and Richie. With Virgil spending more time with Daisy than Richie and shirking his training, he and Richie start arguing more often and getting on each other's nerves until they decide to stop being friends altogether. Daisy for her part says they are both acting like idiots, and neither one of them have been any fun since they stopped hanging out.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Virgil says this to Richie after his attempts to help start annoying him, then when his last attempt to help nearly caused a water slide to fall on him.
  • You Just Had to Say It: One of the kids telling off Heavy C ends up doing this.
Kid 1: Your free lunches are over, Heavy C! We're not afraid of you anymore!
Kid 2: Yeah, you're just a big bag of wind.
Cue Heavy C unleashing his wind powers for the first time and sending the boys flying out of the restaurant.
