Recap / Stargate SG 1 S 7 E 2 Homecoming

Go To

"I joined Stargate Command so that maybe one day I could protect my planet from the Goa'uld. Instead, I brought them right to it."
— Jonas Quinn

Anubis launches an attack on Kelowna after learning about its naquadria deposits from probing Jonas's mind. O'Neill and Carter persuade the Kelownan officials to call a truce with the other nations on their planet in order to better withstand the attack and Teal'c enlists the help of Ba'al, while Jonas and a still-amnesiac Daniel attempt to escape from Anubis's mothership.

"Homecoming" provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Among the items that O'Neill asks if Quinn has packed is hair gel in reference to Corin Nemec's "Gumby hair" in his Star-Making Role.
  • Always Someone Better: Jonas hints that he felt this way about Daniel during his year with the team. He's not particularly bitter about it, just matter-of-fact.
  • The Atoner: Daniel pretty accurately summarizes Jonas's original motivations for joining the team and why he wants to leave now that Daniel has returned.
Jonas: Look, if we get out of this, uh...
Daniel: Oh, you can keep the office.
Jonas: Actually, I was talking about SG-1.
Daniel: Ah. You took the position because you felt guilty about what happened to me and you thought you could make up for it by finishing my work, and now that I'm back...
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Daniel and Jonas briefly do this after they ring down into the storage room on Kelowna and proceed to take out all the Jaffa holding Carter and Teal'c at gunpoint.
  • Background Halo: The final shot of the episode is of Daniel framed by the stargate.
  • But Now I Must Go: Jonas decides to return to Kelowna as he no longer feels that he has to make amends for Daniel's "death" and he believes he can make a difference on his home planet by negotiating a peace treaty with the other two superpowers.
  • The Cavalry: Ba'al's fleet shows up at the end and proceeds to rain weapons fire down on Anubis's mothership, distracting his ground forces long enough for the team to get the upper hand.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Ambassador Dreylock first contacts the SGC for aid, Hammond reminds her that they have already stated they can't interfere in the planet's internal affairs.
    • Anubis shows some interest in studying Jonas's physiology, presumably a reference to the hints that he's a more advanced stage of human evolution.
    • O'Neill mentions the parable of the dog and the dancing monkeys.
    • As he's saying his goodbyes to the team, Jonas reminds Daniel that the first time they met, Daniel told him how inconsequential the in-fighting on his planet would seem once he saw what was going on in the rest of the galaxy.
  • Data Crystal: After Anubis' first attempt at a naquadria reactor explodes he demands the Kelownans turn over the records from the old Goa'uld research post on their planet. It turns out that their archaeologists had dismissed the crystal storing those records as a simple decoration and left it in a museum.
  • Defiant Captive: Jonas gives Anubis some pretty good snark at the beginning of the episode, before he realizes exactly where they are.
Anubis: You appear to be unharmed by the mind probe.
Jonas: I appreciate the concern. You seem calm, considering some lowly humans just put a serious crimp in your plans for galactic domination.
  • Divide and Conquer: Jonas points out the ambassadors of the various powers on his planet that Anubis is playing them against each other in order to get what he wants, warning them that they have to work together if they're going to have any hope of surviving.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: As with the previous episode, Oshu takes control of Lord Yu's forces due to his master's deteriorating health.
  • Easy Amnesia: Daniel implies that most if not all of his memories have returned by the end of the episode, despite very little of his recovery actually being shown on screen.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • The Kelownan officials make a very reluctant attempt to put aside their difference with the Andari Federation and the Tiranian Confederacy in light of Anubis's attack.
    • Teal'c and Oshu convince Ba'al to lend support by pointing out that it's in his best interests to get rid of Anubis.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Hale betrays the team to Anubis, believing that he will leave Kelowna alone if he gets what he's looking for. O'Neill points out what an idiot move this is.
  • Force-Field Door: Jonas is kept in a cell protected by one of these on board Anubis's ship. The explosion resulting from the naquadria overload damages it enough that he's able to run through.
  • Going Critical: The naquadria that Anubis uses to try and re-power his superweapon causes it to overload.
  • Heroism Won't Pay the Bills: Humorously discussed at the end of the episode:
Daniel: It's not that I mind re-joining SG-1 and exploring the galaxy, meeting new cultures, jeopardy, saving the world, that kind of thing... we get paid for this, right?
    O'Neill: Welcome back.
  • Human Aliens: Lampshaded when the representatives from the Andari Federation and the Tiranian Confederacy are introduced to O'Neill and Carter and immediately comment that they "don't look very alien".
  • The Idealist: Daniel comments on Jonas's perpetual optimism:
    Daniel: ...You're very up.
  • In Harm's Way: After some prompting from Jonas, Daniel admits that yes, he is having fun running around an alien spaceship in constant peril.
Daniel: You know, that planet you guys found me on was nice. People were simple, life was quiet...
    Jonas: Why didn't you stay?
Daniel: I couldn't remember what this was like.
    Jonas: It's fun, isn't it?
    Daniel: Yeah.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Hammond says this to Jonas as he prepares to leave the SGC.
  • It's All My Fault: Jonas blames himself for inadvertently leading Anubis to Kelowna, despite the fact there's no way he could have resisted the mind probe.
  • MacGuffin Delivery Service: Carter and Teal'c find the crystal containing instructions on how to make the naquadria more stable just in time for Anubis's Jaffa to show up and demand that they hand it over.
  • Make an Example of Them: Her'ak informs the team that they will be publicly executed to demonstrate to the Kelownans the consequences of defying their "god".
O'Neill: Does it have to be publicly?
Her'ak: (arms his staff weapon inches from O'Neill's face) I could kill you now.
    O'Neill: ...Publicly's fine.
  • Makes Us Even: Daniel tells Jonas that he owes him after Jonas saves his life, to which Jonas suggests that they call it even.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jonas's reaction when he looks out the window of Anubis's mothership and realizes they're in orbit above Kelowna.
  • Ominous Floating Spaceship: Anubis's mothership hovering over Kelowna.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Jonas doesn't seem to be in too bad a shape after taking a staff blast to the side.
  • Put on a Bus/The Bus Came Back: Jonas's departure coincides with Daniel officially re-joining the team.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jonas delivers one of these to the representatives from all three of his planet's superpowers when they continue to fight among themselves despite the fact that they're all facing annihilation by Anubis.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: After Hale turns the team over to Her'ak, he responds by shooting Hale in the chest at point-blank range.
  • Taking the Bullet: Though it doesn't kill him, Jonas takes a staff blast intended for Daniel, fulfilling his perceived need to atone for his role in Daniel's death.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite the fact that he acknowledges Yu's failing health and even drops hints to Teal'c that he's aware Yu isn't really a god, Oshu refuses to betray his master as he's spent his entire life in service to Yu's cause.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Anubis flees in an escape pod as Ba'al obliterates his ship. Her'ak also beat a hasty retreat through the stargate after SG-1 wipes the floor with his troops.
  • Who's on First?: Defied:
Hammond: You think Yu hung us out to dry?
O'Neill: I'm not gonna touch that, sir.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Her'ak fights Carter one-on-one and whacks her across the face pretty good at one point.
  • You Have Failed Me: Anubis has the Goa'uld lieutenant in charge of adapting the naquadria to power his superweapon executed after the test of the weapon fails spectacularly.
