Recap / Star Wars: The Bad Batch S3E2 "Paths Unknown"

Go To

Following a lead, Hunter and Wrecker make a startling discovery on Setron.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: The Pyke whom the Bad Batch brought before Isa Durand is about to undergo punishment. Considering that’s the same one who not only cut off Roland’s horn but also held Omega (a child) hostage for an extremely petty reason, he certainly had it coming.
  • Be Careful What You Say: Last time we saw that Pyke representative, he told Roland that "It would not be wise for our paths to cross again". The Pyke was right when they do meet again, but he didn’t realize his own statement also applies to him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Mox and Stak arrive just in time to save Hunter, Wrecker, and Deke from death by slither vine.
  • Botanical Abomination: The slither vines, engineered as a weapon by Hemlock and his subordinates, quickly grew beyond their control, consuming the research facility and forcing them to abandon it. Being bombarded from orbit failed to kill the vines, which spread beyond the ruined facility and into the surrounding jungle, and their continued spread is treated as an inevitability. The vines themselves come across more like appendages of some eldritch horror than plants, the main plant has a gaping, Sarlacc-like maw filled with teeth, and even pieces that are sliced off quickly mutate into small, but vicious creatures that skitter around like insects, attacking whatever sapient life they can find. Even having a full case of explosives detonated inside of the main body didn't so much kill the creature as agitate it enough to let go of the heroes long enough for them to escape.
  • The Bus Came Back: Hunter and Wrecker go to Roland Durand and his mother Isa to get intel on Dr. Hemlock's whereabouts.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Mox and Stak initially decide to simply take the Havoc Marauder and leave Setron, but hearing Deke call for help convinces them to instead use the ship to rescue Deke, Hunter, and Wrecker. As a reward, Hunter and Wrecker decide to drop them off at Pabu before they continue searching for Omega.
  • Defiant to the End: The Devaronian captain accused of conspiracy has a lot of bravery to tell Lady Durand the syndicate has grown weak under her leadership. When she asks the other guards if they agree but don’t respond, his last word to them is “Cowards!” before being thrown down the shaft.
  • Dirty Coward: The cadets say that they were abandoned by the Clone Troopers in Hemlock's facility when the bombardment order was given, but given their reference to the Troopers saying they had to follow orders, it's implied that they were acting under the inhibitor chips' influence, not out of self-preservation.
  • Exact Words: Isa Durant only agreed to give intel on one of Dr. Hemlock's labs. She never said she'd verify it. The intel was outdated, but still helpful as it did lead the Bad Batch to get the sector of where Dr. Hemlock's base is via the abandoned console.
  • Expy: The Slither Vine resembles a 3 way cross between a Gripevine monster, Flaahgra, and Nettori.
  • Feed It a Bomb: When blaster fire fails to deter the giant plant monster, Wrecker tosses a grenade into its mouth. When that isn't enough, he instructs the kids to drop an entire crate down its throat, which is enough to make it let go of the ship.
  • Inevitably Broken Rule: The young clones warn Hunter and Wrecker not to touch the vines on Setron. They soon learn the hard way of what kind of vines they are referring to and why they are so dangerous that led to the Empire to abandon it when Wrecker messes with one by accident.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Omega's kindness towards Roland Durand was enough to get the Batch a foot in the door when dealing with his family, and spared them from Isa's wrath when they questioned the validity of their intel.
  • Late to the Tragedy: Hemlock's base on Setron was abandoned and destroyed long before the Batch arrived to investigate.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Of the three clone cadets stranded on Seltron, Deke is the nice one, willing to guide Hunter and Wrecker inside the abandoned lab to find intel on Hemlock's whereabouts. Stak is the mean, refusing to help and encouraging Mox to abandon the others and fly off in the Marauder. Mox, the oldest, is the in between; willing to follow Stak's plan to steal the Marauder with some hesitation, but ultimately deciding to go back and rescue them from the monster inside the lab.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Wrecker, of all people, advises Hunter to wait for backup before following their lead, given what happened last time.
  • Orbital Bombardment: When the slither vines grew out of control, Hemlock gave a Base Delta Zero order, though this failed to eradicate the vines, and much of the research facility remained intact.
  • Out of Focus: After being the focus of the previous episode, Crosshair and Omega don't appear in this one. Echo is also absent as he's mentioned to have been helping Rex and they're too far out to help them.
  • Pet the Dog: Downplayed with Isa Durand, who provides Hunter and Wrecker with the best information she has on Hemlock's whereabouts in exchange for the Pyke who broke Roland's horn, but warns the two to leave before her generosity runs out. Played straight with Roland, who, remembering Omega's past kindness, offers a sincere hope that they find her.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Deke and Stak tell Hunter and Wrecker that when the Cadets were taken off Kamino before the Empire destroyed Tipoca City, they thought they would be getting more training to fight against insurgents that hated the Empire, as well as any surviving Jedi, though they ended up on Setron instead to donate blood samples.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Hunter keeps Tech's broken goggles and Omega's doll in clear view of the Marauder's computer to keep himself motivated.
  • Trap Door: Durand has a force field covering a deep abyss set before her throne. If the person standing on it displeases her, off it goes. Victims who threaten Roland like the Pyke however, don’t get that luxury and will be dragged down there to be tortured.
  • Wham Shot: As the slither vines try to prevent the Marauder from taking off, the mouth they're connected to is revealed to be of a Sarlacc plant hybrid.
