Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Accidental Hero: How Anya explains how she saved the boy's life and keeps her telepathy a secret. As she and Loid are leaving the hospital after the head nurse kicked them out because Anya kept messing up, she tells Loid she wants to go swimming before going home, and runs off to the therapy pool. When she gets to the pool, she jumps in and tries to save the boy with a broken leg who wandered off from his physical therapist and started to drown when he fell into the deep end. Not knowing how to swim, Anya starts drowning, and when Loid pulls out both children she's asked how she knew the boy fell into the pool, and rather than saying she read her distressed thoughts, Anya lies that she wanted to go swimming and ran off to find the pool, but when she saw the bubbles she jumped in trying to save the boy.
  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Downplayed. After earning her first Stella, Anya demands that Becky refer to her as "Starlight Anya".
  • Actually a Good Idea: Loid agrees to Anya's request for a dog as it can be used for potential security.
  • Beware of Vicious Dog: Yor shows concern about getting Anya a dog as she thinks about the various ways her daughter could be killed by one. From being bitten apart to sliced with a knife.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Anya comes close to death when she throws herself into the pool to save the drowning boy. By the last second, she and the boy are rescued by Loid.
  • Bowdlerise: In the manga, Anya bled in Yor's Imagine Spots of her getting killed by a dog. Here the blood is replaced with flashes of pink light.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Loid is giving Anya a tour of the hospital, she sees they have a pool and asks if she can go swimming, and Loid tells her they're there to volunteer in order to earn a Stella, and that it's used for physical therapy, not for fun. After they get kicked out because Anya kept messing up, she feels the distressed thoughts of a boy with a broken leg who fell into the pool's deep end and starts drowning, and she makes the excuse that she wants to go swimming before going home and runs off. After Loid pulls out both drowning children, Anya is awarded a Stella for saving someone's life.
  • Commonality Connection: After learning that Damian has a dog, Anya decides to get her own dog to win his interest so they can be friends.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Near the end of the episode, we see a big shaggy dog who somehow sees a vision of the Forger Family.
  • Failure Montage: Anya goes through two of these. The first is at home with her failing all the talents and activities that Loid offers her. The second is at the hospital where she's unable to complete any of the volunteer tasks.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The kids in Anya's class have negative thoughts about her gaining a Stella. Some believe she didn't deserve it while others chew her out for showing it around at school.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When the other kids try to criticize Anya showing off her Stella, Damian comes to her "defense" by accusing them of thinking lowly of their prestigious academy and how they give Stellas on a whim.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Anya manages to overhear a boy drowning in a hospital pool and goes to his rescue. Her efforts earn her a Stella, making her the first kid in her class to earn one.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: While thinking about her strategy on how she'll pass her tests, Anya thinks that she's strategizing just like her papa.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: Anya plans to cheat on her upcoming tests by using her telepathy to read the minds of her classmates for answers.
