Squidward's School for Grown-Ups

Original air date: 6/4/2011 (produced in 2010)

Patrick suddenly grows a beard and decides it's time to act mature.

"Squidward's School for Grown-Ups" contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: Being "grown up" doesn't mean you have to leave behind everything you like; you can still enjoy childish things while being an adult.
  • At the Opera Tonight: The last half of the episode takes place at the Bikini Bottom Opera House.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Both Patrick and the sea urchin are attracted to SpongeBob while he's disguised as a opera Valkyrie.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When SpongeBob is dragged out of the art museum by big burly security guards, they place him out front and walk back inside, with SpongeBob expressing relief that he wasn't kicked out. Only for one of the security guards to come back out and kick SpongeBob off the premises.
  • Kick the Dog: Squidward keeps treating SpongeBob like dirt throughout the episode, even refusing to let him spend time with Patrick since he hates the sponge with a burning passion. In fact, after SpongeBob tries to shave Patrick's beard off, Squidward calls him "BabyPants" and says that he and Patrick are through with him.
  • Lame Rhyme Dodge: Happens when Squidward is showing Patrick some art at a museum.
    Patrick: Boring!
    Squidward: Boring!?
Patrick: Oh, uh, no. I said "flooring"! The flooring compliments the artwork here exquisitely!
Squidward: Yes...Well, I suppose it does.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After mistreating SpongeBob throughout the episode and using his lessons to tear him and Patrick apart, Squidward gets his just-desserts when he gets produce pelted by the audience for criticizing SpongeBob and Patrick's reconciliation.
  • Medium Blending: The food that the waiter brings Patrick, Squidward, and SpongeBob is shown as live-action food.
  • Produce Pelting: Squidward gets this from the audience for bashing SpongeBob and Patrick's performance. SpongeBob and Patrick then turn it into a Food Fight.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Patrick's beard turns out to be a sea urchin sleeping on his face.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: SpongeBob performs an opera number in a notably female opera singer's voice.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Squidward is much more notably an asshole than he was in previous episodes.

Oral Report

Original air date: 3/26/2011 (produced in 2010)

SpongeBob becomes a nervous wreck while trying to do an oral report at Boating School.

"Oral Report" contains examples of:

  • Idiot Ball: SpongeBob clearly has no explanation for not immediately grabbing the goggles when he starts to freak out, instead of going for some time and asking Patrick for them.
  • Imagine the Audience Naked: Sandy gives SpongeBob special goggles that let him see people in their underwear so he can get over his fear of speaking in public. Unfortunately, Patrick breaks them, which makes it seem as if the underwear come to life and heckle SpongeBob.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Patrick spends the whole episode making SpongeBob's situation worst. He gets his comeuppance when he puts in Sandy’s goggles (the ones he broke) and starts seeing SpongeBob's underwear come to life and scare him.
  • Literal-Minded: When SpongeBob asks Patrick to lend him his eyes, Patrick proceeds to literally pull his eyes out to lend him. SpongeBob hastily tells him to keep them.
  • Performance Anxiety: SpongeBob get this, which sets off the plot.
  • Produce Pelting: While SpongeBob is trying to practice giving his report, Patrick throws pillows at him, insisting that is what the audience would do.
  • Take Our Word for It: When SpongeBob looks at Patrick in his underwear through the goggles, he cringes in disgust. The viewers don't get to see it.
  • Somethingitis: Sandy concludes SpongeBob has "Oral Report-itis", which is a common fear in most Bikini Bottomites afraid to present to someone.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When Patrick suggests that SpongeBob get help from Sandy, he mentions that she can make a fake boating license for him, which SpongeBob points out is illegal. Later when talking to Sandy, she offers him special goggles to help ease his anxiety or to make him a fake boating license, which SpongeBob says is still illegal.
  • Sudden Eye Color: When Patrick tries to watch SpongeBob, his eyes briefly turn green.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Patrick pretends to be Mrs. Puff while SpongeBob practices giving his speech.
  • With Friends Like These...: Patrick's attempts at helping SpongeBob get over his fear of public speaking only make things worse.
