New Fish in Town

Original air date: 1/15/2011 (produced in 2010)

Squidward becomes friends with his new neighbor.

New Fish in Town contains examples of:

  • Birds of a Feather: Squidward almost immediately forms a bond with Howard due to both being artists and musicians. At least until Howard learns to loosen up and becomes a jellyfisher and bubble blower like SpongeBob and Patrick.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode is set at Conch Street, mainly Squidward's house.
  • Commonality Connection: Squidward befriends Howard over their mutual interests in painting, playing music, drinking tea, and generally how quiet and sophisticated they are (especially compared to SpongeBob and Patrick).
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After Squidward declares that he draws the line at living near three dunderheads, he causes Howard's trailer to roll off a cliff so Howard will jump off after it.
  • Literal Metaphor: Squidward shows that he has literally been "burning the candle at both ends."
  • Maintain the Lie: Squidward goes to great lengths to make sure that Howard doesn't know about SpongeBob and Patrick so he won't want to move away.
  • Running Gag: Someone clapping their hands right after they jump off a cliff.
  • Spit Take: Squidward does this when Howard mentions his dislike of living next to jellyfishers and bubble blowers.

Love That Squid

Original air date: 2/12/2011 (produced in 2010)

Squidward gets ready to go out a date and SpongeBob assists him.

Love That Squid contains examples of:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Squidward prepares for his date by spending the episode practicing being a polite, patient gentleman, only to finally snap and unleash a torrent of outrage on SpongeBob. When he realizes Squilvia witnessed the whole thing, he assumes she doesn't want anything to do with him anymore. Instead, she finds his outburst "dreamy."
  • An Aesop: When you want to impress a crush, Be Yourself, especially if you're naturally not the most friendly guy in the block because chicks dig jerks.
  • Art Shift: Squidward’s flashback to his last date is done in the style of ‘30s cartoons.
  • Circling Birdies: Squidward gets circling clarinets and hearts over his head when he sees Squilvia.
  • Disguised in Drag:
    • SpongeBob disguises himself as Squilvia for a practice date.
    • At the end of the episode, Patrick disguises himself in drag and demands to be taken out for a movie and some plastic popcorn.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After everything Squidward experiences, he runs into Squilvia who saw the whole thing and accepted it all, and takes Squidward on their date.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Squidward graduated from L.A.M.E. college. However, we don't get to learn what the initials stand for.
  • Gibberish of Love: Squidward gets so flustered around Squilvia that he can only babble inanely and SpongeBob has to arrange their date for him.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up:
    • Of Squilvia when Squidward compliments her looks.
    • SpongeBob showing off his hand because he didn’t tip enough for his manicure. Said hand is really boney, naturally creeping out Squidward.
  • I'm Melting!: Happens to Squidward when he sees Squilvia for the first time, just after getting Circling Birdies as mentioned above.
  • Look A Like Lovers: Squidward's first impression of Squilvia:
Squidward: SpongeBob, she's got it all! Class, style, grace, and looks only matched by yours truly!
  • Pale Females, Dark Males: Inverted: Squilvia's skin is darker than Squidward's.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Squidward unleashes one at SpongeBob after his practice date goes wrong, which Squilvia witnesses.
SpongeBob: As I was saying, I'd like to go over just a few more crucial aspects of the first date, such as —
Squidward: [grabs SpongeBob's mouth] SPONGEBOB! Would you please just shut it and leave me alone?!
    SpongeBob: Um, Squidward —
Squidward: Don't "um, Squidward" me, you, you annoying, insignificant, waste of my time!
    SpongeBob: Um, Squidward — !
Squidward: Don't interrupt me!! And don't call me, look at me, write me, or even think of me! Because you and I, we are NOT FRIENDS!!! And never will be!
SpongeBob: Does this mean there won't be a second date?
  • Right Behind Me: When Squidward finally snaps at SpongeBob, it turns out Squilvia was right behind him having witnessed the whole thing and he expects her to be turned off by his behavior. It turns out that Squilvia appreciates a man who "doesn't suffer fools".
  • Staircase Tumble: When Squidward realizes his date is in five minutes, he leaves in a haste. SpongeBob tries to stop him because there's still some dating tactics he hasn't went through yet, but ends up tripping on his shoe and tumbling down the stairs, bumping into Squidward who tumbles out the door with him. Said tumble ends up stripping SpongeBob of his disguise, revealing his true identity followed by Squidward chewing him out.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Squidward manages to win Squilvia's heart just by being himself.
  • The Unreveal: The episode ends with Squidward and Squilvia about to go on their first date, but we never get to see their date.
  • Wingding Eyes: Squilvia gets hearts in her eyes as she appreciates everything Squidward did.
