  • Family-Values Villain: Grandpa Redbeard is a ruthless pirate who is quite angry to discover his grandson has been lying to him.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward try to cover themselves after Mr. Krabs tears off their pirate clothes, leaving them naked.
  • It Runs in the Family: At the end when Grandpappy takes off with all of his grandson's loot. Mr. Krabs just laughs and says "I knew I got my talent from somewhere."
  • Maintain the Lie: Mr. Krabs has to convince Grandpappy that he is a pirate...which doesn't work out, but his grandfather still loves him nonetheless.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Old: Redbeard looks the same age as he did currently during the flashback of Mr. Krabs as a baby, showing no signs of aging years later.
  • A Pirate 400 Years Too Late: Grandpappy.
  • So Proud of You: Mr. Krabs's success with the Krusty Krab, which to Grandpappy proves that he's still a pirate at heart.

Cephalopod Lodge

Original air date: 2/17/2009 (produced in 2008)

Squidward gets kicked out of a secret society thanks to SpongeBob and Patrick, who try to make it up to him.

Cephalopod Lodge Contains examples of:

  • Bag of Kidnapping: SpongeBob and Patrick do this to Squidward to try and put him into their own secret society.
  • Brotherhood of Funny Hats: The titular Lodge.
  • Childhood Brain Damage:
Squidward: Were you dropped on your head as a child?
    SpongeBob: How do you know?
    Squidward (sarcastically): Psychic powers.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: Squidward "stops" the giant eel-sock, which is SpongeBob and Patrick in disguise, and he is allowed back in the lodge, but then SpongeBob and Patrick reveal their disguise, which causes Squidward to be kicked out once more.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: SpongeBob and Patrick are actually right when they think Roger was the reason for them kicking Squidward out of the lodge, because he didn't watch for intruders.
    • Never My Fault: That being said, SpongeBob and Patrick shift the entire blame onto Roger, while he shifts the blame onto Squidward. In reality, it was all three of their faults.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Why did SpongeBob and Patrick follow Squidward inside the lodge? Because he was happy in the beginning.
  • Get Out!: Squidward is banned from the lodge because the other members believe he was responsible for letting outsiders like SpongeBob and Patrick in.
  • Idiot Ball: SpongeBob in this conversation, after Squidward kicks SpongeBob and Patrick out of his house. This is one of the rare moments where Patrick is shown to be smarter than SpongeBob.
Patrick: I don't think Squidward wants to join our lodge.
SpongeBob: Oh sure he does. He just needs a little push.
  • Karma Houdini: Nobody in the lodge receives any comeuppance for kicking out Squidward for a nonsensical reason.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: The "eel" is a giant realistic sock.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: SpongeBob is suspicious when Squidward is constantly smiling and positive on the third Wednesday of every month.
  • Pain-Powered Leap: As part of the initiation into the Feather Friends, Squidward has to have his tongue stung by a jellyfish. SpongeBob and Patrick do the same first and yelp in pain, but shake it off otherwise. But when Squidward's turn, he leaps into the air, screaming in pain.
  • Persona Non Grata: Squidward gets banned from the lodge when SpongeBob and Patrick follow him there and the leader believes he's responsible for letting outsiders in.
  • Secret Handshake: The Lodge has one that involves slapping their tentacles and suction cups together. SpongeBob and Patrick try to create one that is essentially patty-cake. When Squidward points out that flaw, SpongeBob tries to justify it by saying they don't use their pinkies.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: The cephalopods seem to harvest a dislike for SpongeBob and Patrick just as much as Squidward does, seeing them as "outsiders" to the committee. This is possibly why Squidward despises them.
  • Tongue Trauma: After starting their own club, SpongeBob and Patrick invent an initiation ritual, which has the new member's tongue stung by a jellyfish. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward (by force, twice) go through this.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Just as Squidward's about to be returned back to the lodge he gets kicked out once SpongeBob and Patrick revealed themselves underneath the sock costume.
