Recap / Spider Man The Animated Series S 03 E 11 Venom Returns

Go To

Baron Mordo and Dormammu make a deal with Eddie Brock, who is currently incarcerated the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane, to give him back the symbiote in exchange for him retrieving a device from Stark Enterprises that will allow Dormammu to be brought to Earth. But when the task becomes too much for Venom alone, they enlist the help criminal lunatic, Cletus Kasady, in exchange for another symbiote, as the first one was about to reproduce.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Doctor Kafka didn't believe Eddie's stories about Venom - thinking "Venom never existed." Instead, she thinks that Eddie was deluded because of Spider-Man's "horrible persecution" of him. This is odd because not only is Eddie completely upfront about it, but there were a number of witnesses that actually saw Venom (including Jonah and Robbie). Her skepticism doesn't last long, though.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Venom closes in on a webbed-up Spider-Man, War Machine blasts him aside.
  • Bring It: After Carnage makes it clear he's at the expo to get the probe.
War Machine: You want that probe, you have to go through me!
    Carnage: With pleasure!
  • Cassandra Truth: During at Ravencroft, Eddie kept talking about Venom and how he would one day be reunited with the symbiote. Dr. Ashley Kafka thought it was in his head, until the symbiote returns and Eddie becomes Venom once more.
Venom: Do you believe us now, Doctor?
  • Crossover: This episode and the next episode after serve as a crossover with Iron Man: The Animated Series.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Carnage reveals his true face to show how he already knows Spider-Man.
  • Have We Met?:
    • At Ravencroft, Eddie is told he has a visitor (a monotone woman in a black jacket), but he questions if they have ever met. It's not until she mentions "us" that it starts to dawn on him that his symbiote is controlling this woman.
    • After Carnage appears at the expo, he remarks he's glad to have encountered Spider-Man again. When Spider-Man expresses confusion, Carnage reveals he's Kasady.
  • Hope Spot: When Spider-Man reveals to War Machine Venom's weakness to sound, it appears that they are going to defeat but then Carnage joins the fight.
  • Insult Backfire: Over a certain armored hero butting in.
Venom: This wasn't your fight! It is now, little man of iron!
War Machine: [blasting him] Wrong! Iron Man's the other guy, but thanks for the compliment!
  • Never My Fault: Eddie Brock blames Spider-Man for his failed career as a journalist. Sure, Brock may blame Spidey for being unable to expose Curt Connors as The Lizard, but it's not Spidey's fault that he mistakenly exposed Flash Thompson as Spider-Man; lost a recently-gotten job as a result of a Spider Slayer attacking him; or that he destroyed his reputation by framing Spidey with the theft of a rare mineral.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Peter in response to seeing Venom on the security cameras.
    • Spider-Man in response to the newest symbiote being bonded to Kasady.
  • Skeptic No Longer: Once Eddie reunites with the symbiote and becomes Venom once more, Doctor Kafka finally sees that Eddie was telling the truth.
  • Unreliable Narrator: When Eddie Bock is describing his troubles to Dr. Kafka, he makes it sound like he's a crusader for justice and that Spider-Man was the bad guy.
  • That Man Is Dead: After bonding with the symbiote, the newly formed Carnage tells the guards that Kasady is gone.
  • We Meet Again: When Carnage attacks the expo, he remarks he's so thrilled to encounter Spider-Man again.
