Season 1, Episode 12 of Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM). While on a mission to the big city to replace Nicole's malfunctioning microchip, Sonic and Sally encounter the Guardian, a mysterious cloaked figure who guards a dormant wizard named Lazaar and his computer of evil spells. Both Robotnik and Sonic believe the spells could be useful and set out to elude the watchful Guardian and steal Lazaar's computer.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • Brought Down to Normal: To ensure Sonic retrieves his computer, Lazaar strips him of his Super-Speed, forcing him to rely on his wits to get it back. He's repowered by the end of the episode.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Robotnik boasts of his evil to the Guardian to convince him to allow him access to Lazaar's sanctum.
Robotnik: I want the location of Lazaar's lair. Name your price.
Lazar's guardian: You intend harm to my master?
Robotnik: Oh, you wound me dear guardian! I merely want to wake the grand wizard and honor his evilness! We have much in common.
Lazaar's guardian: ...yes. I can see that.
    • Again when he checks the index on the spell computer.
Computer: Amulets, banishments, bones, cages, curses...
    Robotnik: What a lovely variety!
  • Durable Deathtrap: The traps guarding Lazaar's resting place, since who knows when, with his exploits being talked about in "legend". One of them, a Pendulum of Death, does break when Sonic tries to hang on it.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Lazaar, or at least he was, once.
  • Forbidden Zone: The area where Lazar's fortress rests is actually called this.
  • Heel Realization: Lazaar's centuries of slumber have changed him; he admits that he regrets the evil he did in the past and has no desire to continue it.
  • Ironic Echo: Sally warns Sonic that his Super-Speed is no substitute for common sense. When Lazaar later takes his speed away as he sets out to retrieve the computer and his friends, the wizard tells him to rely on his wits.
  • Magitek: Lazaar's computer is a mix of magic and technology, with most of his power stored in a crystal. There is an index of spells for the wielder's use such as mind control and summoning. Lazaar has a belt that access some emergency magic.
  • Mind Manipulation: Robotnik casts a mind control spell on Sally and Bunnie while in possession of Lazaar's computer. When Sonic takes it back, he was able to shut off the spell.
  • Only the Worthy May Pass: Lazaar's traps don't stop Robotnik from entering his tomb and taking the computer with all his spells, because they were meant to ignore anyone evil. Sonic's able to get past them too, because Lazaar didn't seem to account for an intruder with Super-Speed.
  • Refusal of the Call: Sonic asks Lazaar to join the Freedom Fighters, but he turns it down in favor of keeping his computer out of the wrong hands.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Sally and Bunnie suggest to Lazaar that if his computer is so dangerous, maybe he should just destroy it and be done with it. He however refuses, saying that doing that would just release all the evil stored in it.
