Recap / Sonic Prime S1E7 "It Takes One to No Place"

Go To

After returning alongside Nine to fight the Chaos Council, Sonic suddenly finds himself speeding through into a new Shatter Space, the tropical and watery No Place, and meets a pirate crew of counterparts of his friends being lead by a counterpart of Knuckles, Dread. However, despite a welcoming first meeting, Sonic soon finds out that this crew isn't exactly the best in the seas, with Dread turning out to be far different from the determined Knuckles.

Tropes:

  • Anything but That!: Since he can't swim, the last thing Sonic ever wants is to be around or in massive bodies of water. Luckily, he discovers that his shoes now have the ability to hover over the ocean.
  • Art Shift: When Dread Knuckles is introduced, Sonic has a flashback that is animated to look like a scene from the game that Knuckles debuted in, complete with the original music in the background.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends on Sonic and the No Place crew encountering Rusty Rose, who had arrived alongside a robotic army and are all ready to attack.
  • Blood Knight: The female members of Dread's crew (Batten Rouge and Black Rose), as shown right from the get-go in their and Sails' Establishing Character Moment.
  • Freak Out: Batten, Black Rose, and Sails get this reaction when Sonic rows them to the Angel's Voyage as fast as a modern speedboat.note  Black Rose is hyperventilating when they get to the ship, while Sails is visibly trembling with fear.
  • Gasp!: Sonic lets out one when Batten Rouge shouts for her crewmates to "cleave him to the brisket!".
  • Life of the Party: After his obsession with finding the Devil's Lighthouse (a blue Prism shard) led to him losing his old ship and crew, Dread Knuckles invokes this with his new crew by having nothing but fun.
  • Not Worth Killing: After Sails figures out Sonic isn't part of Dread's old crew after all, he and the girls decide to leave the hedgehog on the islet. However, Sonic gets them to take him along by volunteering to row the boat.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Oh, Crap!: Sonic has this reaction at the beginning of the episode upon realizing he's been transported to yet another dimension, and a waterlogged one at that. He gets several more (including the aforementioned Gasp!) when the pirates initially attack him, and then again at the end of the episode when Rusty Rose appears in a giant submarine.
  • Once More, with Clarity: The opening replays shots from the first episode, but from Shadow's side of events, revealing he arrived in the cave just after Sonic, using Chaos Control during the explosion. The camera pans away from everyone being blown back to show Shadow warping away, and as Sonic is floating off, the shot lingers and Shadow reappears in the void.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Dread's former crew board his ship for supplies, but Sonic challenges them and almost wins before falling off the ship. This inspires Dread's current crew (sans Dread himself) to fight back against the hostile pirates and drive them off...but they still lose their whole stock of Sea Dogs.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Dread Knuckles has become this ever since the Devil's Lighthouse incident, and enforces it on the rest of the crew as well, to their chagrin. When the crew make a passing reference to this, Sonic lampshades it by asking what kind of pirates don't commit piracy.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Played for Laughs with Black Rose and Sails, who each give off one of these after letting Sonic row the dinghy (see Freak Out above).
  • Shout-Out: While No Place is your standard pirate world, the fact that there seems to be very little land (with Green Hill seemingly submerged, for example) makes it reminiscent of Waterworld.
  • Slasher Smile: Batten, Black Rose, and Sails switch between these and Death Glares while attacking Sonic on the islet.
  • Spanner in the Works: Sonic's search for Nine is interrupted when he finds himself in yet another world.
  • Special Guest: Sean McLoughlin (a.k.a. Jacksepticeye) guest stars in this episode as one of Dread's former pirates. Fittingly enough, he's named "Jack".
  • You Won't Like How I Taste: Sonic tries this when he thought that the pirates planned to cook him.
