Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 18 Dr Eggmans Tomato Sauce

Go To

The eighteenth episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

Dr. Eggman invents a new tomato sauce that causes him to become a celebrity chef. Because of this, Team Sonic is suspicious of Eggman's possible ulterior motives.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Public Confession: At the end of the episode, Eggman, despite having his evil plan foiled, is still confident that it's not over yet.
Eggman: You may have won this round, but no matter. I still have a warehouse full of thousands more of these evil robotic cans of sauce! (lets out his signature evil laugh... before realizing there was a live TV camera recording him; cut to the egg-shaped mad scientist sitting defeated inside his dimly-lit fortress, surrounded by tons of his unsold tomato sauce cans) Hmm. Probably shouldn't have said all that on TV.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Sonic comes to Unnamed Village after finding out Eggman's tomato sauce isn't poisonous, Stratford runs towards him and says "Hey, hey Mister? You're my hero! Can I get an autograph?" It is then revealed that Stratford was running towards Eggman.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After getting his plane back under his control, Tails manages to save Team Sonic and shut down Eggman's robots by snatching the remote.
  • Cargo Ship: In-Universe; Tails has an obsession with his plane in this episode. He calls it his "baby", nonchalantly says "I do" when Knuckles teasingly asks him if he loves it, plans to give it a massage (something even Sticks thinks is crazy) and the only reason he's in any way happy about leaving the workshop is because he wants to buy more supplies for it.
  • Combining Mecha: Near the end of the episode, Eggman forms one from his tomato sauce cans and the village's machines to attack Team Sonic (sans Tails, who was in the process of reprogramming his plane).
  • Deadly Disc: One of the machines reprogrammed by Eggman's tomato sauce can robots is a jukebox that fires records. Tails manages to reprogram the jukebox and fire its records at the other reprogrammed machines to destroy them.
  • Good-Times Montage: Tails implores his plane, which had been reprogrammed by one of Eggman's tomato sauce cans, to remember the good times they had together.
  • Red Herring: Team Sonic suspects there's something wrong with Eggman's brand of tomato sauce, but Tails' tests don't detect anything bad in it. It turns out there really is nothing wrong with the sauce, but the cans it comes in are really robots that reprogram anything electronic to terrorize the village.
  • Shout-Out: Tails mentions that he tested the tomato sauce for "acidity, radioactivity, arsenic, old lace, and mind control serum."
  • Something Itis: When Tails inspects Eggman's tomato sauce for poison only for the results to come negative, Knuckles asks him if he also tested for "Brainitis". Tails tells him there's no such thing as "Brainitis", to which Knuckles asks him how he explains.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: This exchange when Team Sonic discovers Eggman's true motive:
Sticks They all laughed when I said our appliances would turn against us, but who's laughing now?
    Sonic: You?
Sticks: Why would I be laughing? This isn't funny. You got a sick sense of humor.
