But the simple life isn't as simple and easy as he believes, and he's a better king than a baker.

Tropes

  • An Aesop: There's no such thing as an easy life.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • When standing in front of the mirror Miranda found in the attic, Roland wishes to be the village baker. When that wish comes true, he learns that the baker's life isn't any easier.
    • To a lesser extent, Amber wants the cake to be 100 layers tall. Only while making said cake does she regret asking for that.
Amber: Why did I ask for 100 layers?
  • Chekhov's Gun: The family uses the cake order to get into the castle, so they can find the mirror.
  • Death Glare: James gives this to Amber after Baileywick reminds the royal family of the 100-layer cake, as it was Amber's fault for placing that order in the first place.
  • Epic Fail: How does (former) King Roland try to get milk from the cow? By trying to ask without even trying to milk nor touch the animal.
  • Foreshadowing: Baileywick hopes that the lumpy cake the royal family made tastes better than it looks, and when James gets a taste of it, he sticks his tongue out and shakes his head, indicating that it doesn't taste good. It's when the royals and villagers eat the cake that it turns out to taste worse than it looks.
  • Lethal Chef: As Miranda says, Roland is a much better king than a baker—the cake he made in the climax turns out to taste horrible.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: James sarcastically thanks Amber for asking for a hundred-layer cake when the royals realize that baking said cake is the only way to get into the castle to find the mirror.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Roland gives this when Baileywick reminds him of the 100-layer cake order, realizing that the family didn't even start making it.
  • Riches to Rags: This is what happens to the royal family when Roland wishes to be the village baker.
  • The Simple Life is Simple: While it's mainly baking with farming on the side, King Roland believes this, so much that when he accidentally wishes that he was a baker instead of a king, he wants to stay for a while rather than undo the spell. What happens is a Surprisingly Realistic Outcome, and the family fails to adapt, with them only getting by because Sofia and her mother have actual farming and baking experience from their pre-royalty life.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The events of the episode wouldn't have happened if Miranda hadn't found the wishing-granting mirror in the attic, much less hung it up in the castle, in the first place.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's never revealed what happened to the real baker when Roland was in his place.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: The "100 layer" cake the royal family tries to bake doesn't even look like it has 100 layers. Though it's worth noting that the family is still new to baking.
