"I thought the Kerch were more affectionate."

"The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak."
Kirigan

Zoya and Tolya arrive in Ketterdam to offer the Neshyenyer search to the Crows. The blade was stolen by a man known as the Disciple, and the group plans to reach it through his fence, Ohval Saran, through a tea shop in Shu Han. Meanwhile, Wylan dodges Jesper on a shopping trip with Tolya. The group reconvenes to reveal that Ohval is the Disciple and plan the heist. Zoya tries to advise Nina to abandon Matthias. Pekka Rollins is delivered to Hellgate, where Matthias' cellmate immediately tries to kill him, but Pekka defeats him and establishes his authority.

Baghra and Genya arrive at the court's camp, where Genya's poisoning of the king is heard by all. Following Baghra's advice, Alina projects herself to Kirigan to try and sever their link, but she is interrupted by Mal. The two argue about their situation. Afterwards, Baghra tells her that Alina must destroy the Fold, and that Baghra will help her find the Firebird to see it through.

The Crows break in to the Disciple's traditional home to steal the blade. Ohval bests Nina, who was sent to distract them, and the Crows are tripped by the traps in the house.

Tropes:

  • Actually, I Am Him: The Disciple's fence, Ohval Saran, is the Disciple.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Genya and David reunite after their separation in episode 3. Genya initially tries avoiding him, but after David tells Genya that it doesn't matter to him that she's scarred, the two kiss.
  • First Rule of the Yard: Upon Pekka's arrival at Hellgate, Matthias' cellmate immediately tries to kill him for revenge against his dead brother. Pekka overpowers him and bashes his head in, quickly bringing the prisoners under his sway.
  • Good Luck Charm: Nikolai bequeaths his lucky compass to Alina when she tells him she's leaving to go find the Firebird.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Jesper didn't think anything of complimenting Wylan on his skills, but Wylan says that the compliments are patronizing in light of his inability to read, which Jesper expressed incredulous disbelief about. Jesper takes offense to Wylan asking him why he keeps being a Durast secret - we later learn this is because his beloved mother was also a Durast, and died drawing out poisons from a girl's body.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Zoya haughtily says she won't engage in thievery like the others, as she's a soldier. Tolya remarks that there's not a ton of difference.
  • Shipper on Deck: Tolya tries to help Jesper and Wylan get over a rough patch in their relationship.
  • Trauma Button: Kaz has to take off his gloves to participate in a Shu custom of touching water from a small bowl to one's face, to his extreme reluctance. When the negotiations go south, Ohval signals someone to spill tea on him, pressing his button of almost drowning because he was stuck on a plague boat - and then Nina grabs his bare hand, reminding him of discovering his brother's corpse. He ends up huddled against the side of a stall.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Nina pretends Kaz is her husband to the black market fencer to explain why they're traveling as a duo. He's a rock, and so is unconvincing despite Nina's best attempts to prod him into emotional reaction.
