Recap / Scrubs S 8 E 17 My Chief Concern

Go To

J.D. is mad at Turk when he overrules him on a medical decision in his new role as chief surgeon. But did he do it just because J.D. is moving away to be close to his son and taking a new job at another hospital?

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Elliot finally calls Cox out on the fact that he's upset that JD is leaving. Cox still can't quite make himself admit it, but she hit the bullseye.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Turk and JD have to recognize that JD's move is good, that they're both entering new phases of their lives as fathers and as doctors, but... living 37 minutes away (in good traffic) means an hour and a half round trip, meaning they'll only be seeing each other on the weekends. Four years of college, four years of med school, eight years at Sacred Heart... After sixteen years, they're not going to be seeing each other every day, let alone all day every day.
  • Bromance: The conflict of the episode is JD and Turk breaking up rather than JD and Elliot.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: "Because I didn't like the way Doug said 'Here', he's been replaced by Jimmy, the overly touchy orderly."
  • Epic Fail: Cox is so happy JD is leaving Sacred Heart for a different hospital that he tries to do a backflip and faceplants.
  • Karma Houdini: JD shows up in a t-shirt and sweatpants to pick up Sam at Kim's hospital, blocks the parking lot, yells "Screw you, gramps!" at her Chief of Medicine, laughs at his name (Mantoots)... and charms the guy into offering him a job as Residency Director.
  • Skewed Priorities: As you might expect, Janitor does not give good advice to a kid who's upset with a classmate.
    Ethan: Are you on drugs?
    Janitor: Are you?
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Cox spends a few seconds stretching his chest and upper back before attempting a backflip... and falls flat on his face.
  • Time-Passes Montage: We see JD buying a new apartment and furnishing it in a rapid montage.
