Recap / Scrubs S 8 E 18 My Finale

Go To

It's JD's last day at Sacred Heart, but the day is not the special one that he had envisioned and hoped for. He tries to hold out hope for a great sendoff.

  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: The first half closes with a subversion of the typical lesson Cox gives to JD, the episode ends with a full Mentor Moment.
JD: Dr. Cox, there's something I want from you.
Cox: I know you do, newbie, and I have been searching through this wonderful book that you gave me just trying to find the exact right speech to share with you, but alas there's nothing in hear on barking up the wrong tree or even a 'turn back now because this doesn't end well for you' section. So, I'm gonna have to go ahead and wing it. Let's see what happens. Newbie, I know you want this to be a very special day for the both of us. I get that; I truly do. You want feelings to be shared, you want hugs to flow. But that is not nor has it ever been who I am, and you know that. So, I'm really sorry there, newbie, but this is not a special day for me. It's just ... a day.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: After an hour of JD begging him to admit he's going to miss him, Cox finally admits his feelings for JD. Of course, an intern has to trick him into it.
Sunny: Ugh. Finally gone. Talk about making a big deal over nothing, y'know? I mean, Dr. Dorian was fine, but he was no better than any other doctor.
Cox: For the record, he was the best that ever came through this dump. John Dorian was the first and only doctor I ever met who cared as much as I do. And you can forget about him being just an exceptional physician, because the fact of the matter is he was a damn exceptional person. That's why people gravitated to him. That's why I did. He was my friend.
  • The Cameo: Tom Cavanagh shows up for an under five as Dan Dorian in an Imagine Spot. So do Amy Smart as Tasty Coma Wife, Nicole Sullivan as annoying (dead) patient Jill Tracy, Michael Learned as beloved (dead) patient Mrs. Wilk, Aloma Wright as (dead) Nurse Roberts, and a whole corridor of past characters.
  • Creator Cameo: Bill Lawrence shows up as the janitor taking down the sheet at the front entrance at the end of the episode.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Sunny helps J.D get Cox to open up about how much he truly cared about him by provoking him with a dismissive comment. Unfortunately for her, there's a little element of the plan that she overlooked...
Cox: You realise that even though he gets to leave, you... have to stay?
Sunny: I didn't think of that.
    Cox: No. You didn't.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Kelso misses doctoring so much he becomes a part time doctor. It's called "locum tenens".
  • End-of-Series Awareness: The episode opens with a bunch of flashbacks to the first episode.
    • Subverted with JD's Imagine Spot where he turns off the lights ... and that shuts off the power to all the hospital, causing patients to crash and die.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Carla and Elliot imitate Turk and JD's closeness, leading to a sapphic hug. Turk and JD approve, offering suggestions.
  • Imagine Spot: The episode ends with an extended one, projected as a family movie on the sheet Turk hung up at the front door to say goodbye. It is implied that this is what will actually happen in the future.
  • Passing the Torch: JD lampshades that this is happening as he's leaving Sacred Heart.
  • The Reveal: We finally learn the Janitor's name: Glen Matthews. Immediately subverted when an orderly walks by and calls him Tommy. Whichever one is the real name remains unexplained.
