Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 1 E 8 The Grasp Of The Gnome

Go To

An evil Gnome doesn't take kindly to people dressed as pirates at Crystal Cove's renaissance fair.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Anachronism Stew: The staff isn't happy that some of the attendees show up as pirates.
  • Answer Cut: When the Queen says they must keep out the pirates because, "Who knows what shambling low-lives will arrive?" Enter Shaggy and Scooby dressed as pirates.
  • Arc Words: "This has all happened before", which increases in significance as the series progresses.
  • Artistic License – Biology: The explanation given for the Gnome's magic paralysis is lacking, even for this show.
  • Bound and Gagged: Shaggy ends up like this at one point.
  • Captain Colorbeard: Scooby uses the pirate name 'Dogbeard' for his costume.
  • Dangerous Key Fumble: The pair of pirate-clad fairgoers are ambushed in the parking lot, and one is grabbed by the wrist and paralyzed as he reaches down for his dropped car keys.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Shaggy and Scooby watching the Renaissance Fair announcer who says he hates pirates secretly dresses up like one. It's made to seem like watching him dress up in women's clothing. Even Scooby says his "brain needs a shower".
  • Monster of the Week: The Gnome, a hideous fae who paralyzes with his glowing blue touch.
  • Mythology Gag: Velma calls Daphne by her old nickname "Danger-prone Daphne" after she falls into the hidden door inside a tree.
  • Our Gnomes Are Weirder
  • Tainted Veins: These show on on the Gnome's victims.

Velma: <reading a letter from Mr. E> Don't give up, this has all happened before. <After reading the letter> What has happened before?
