Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 1 E 6 The Legend Of Alice May

Go To

When a new girl moves to town and tries to catch Freddie's eye, Daphne is outraged. But she's not the only one who's suspecting this girl is up to something, as the gang is now investigating the case of disappearing prom dates, and a zombie girl seems to be linked to their absences.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Call-Back: We see the capture of the Creeper from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in a flashback — re-animated in the Mystery Incorporated style. Which could be a very subtle hint that it's not a genuine flashback to the original series' era, but a story Alice and/or her employer concocted in the present to tell the gang.
  • Cool Big Sis: Daphne's sister Delilah senses her "baby sis" having boy troubles and offers her a little pep talk. Said talk does get a little Metaphorgotten, though.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Alice's flashback to the Creeper's arrest shows her as a little girl, despite her apparently being the same age as the gang, who are still teenagers in their own flashback to the event. This discrepancy actually foreshadows the fact that her entire story is false.
  • Latex Perfection: The intro shows Alice wearing a mask of her face over a Ghost Girl mask over her actual face.
  • Monster of the Week: The Ghost Girl, who haunts high school proms and spirits away her dates.
  • Reverse Whodunnit: The intro scene, where the Ghost Girl wears an Alice May mask to kidnap a promgoer, makes it pretty obvious that Alice is wearing the Ghost Girl costume. The actual reveal is that she's really Alice Carlswell... and then that she actually isn't.
  • Two-Timer Date: Shaggy goes to the usual comic lengths to keep Scooby from realizing he's leaving for the prom and will miss the beginning of the marathon.
  • Urban Legend: The villain is playing on Crystal Cove's local version of the Beware of Hitchhiking Ghosts legend, this time recast as prom-goers being spirited away by a girl who turns out to be a ghost.
  • Woman Scorned: Velma does not take Shaggy's refusal to go to prom well.
  • You Killed My Father: Subverted. While Alice May claims this as part of her motivations, she is, in fact, not the daughter of The Creeper.

Alice: You ever going to tell me why you cooked up this whole Alice May scheme, just so I could then hand it over to a bunch of kids and their dog?
Ed: You were paid for a job by my employer Mr. E and that job is over. You don't need to know his motives. Let's just say he needed them to start looking into the real mystery hiding beneath Crystal Cove; a mystery that led to the disappearance of four youths. A mystery whose time has come to be solved.
