Recap / Scooby Doo And Guess Who S 1 E 15 The Sword The Fox And The Scooby Doo

Go To

While vacationing in Japan, the gang nearly run off the road thanks to a fox monster and are rescued by Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill, who's attending his class reunion. However, the fox monster kidnapped his old drama teacher, forcing them to team up to solve the mystery.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Mark Hamill's episode has plenty of references to him being Luke Skywalker. One person asks him to show off his "robotic hand", Shaggy asks him to use the Jedi Mind Trick on Scooby, etc. In relation to his other famous role as The Joker, Hamill slips into one of said character's trademark laughs and also brought up how he knew of Mystery Inc due to their previous Batman case.
  • Brick Joke: Shaggy and Scooby keep trying to convince Hamill to lightsaber-fight with them, much to his irritation. While they're wound up in a rope, he sword-fights the Fox Monster to save them, saying that he always carries the sword because lots of fans want to sword-fight with him.
  • Call-Back:
  • Foul Fox: The Monster of the Week is a fox monster.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: The sword turns out to be disguised as a broom handle.
  • It Belongs in a Museum: Mr. Roacher found out about the famous sword and wanted to find it, sell it, and retire wealthy. The drama teacher said it belonged...well, in a museum and threatened to tell, so Mr. Roacher disguised himself as the Fox Monster to crash the class reunion and kidnap him.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Hamill says that the kids at his school never liked gym teacher Mr. Roacher and used to call him Mr. Roach. At the end, Roacher yells that he hates that nickname.
  • Mirror Routine: The Fox Monster is right on the other side of a Japanese paper wall Scooby is walking along, and he has his silhouette from the wall act like Scooby's shadow.
  • Placebo Effect: When Scooby says digging a way out for the others would be "demeaning", Shaggy suggests to Hamill that he could do the Jedi Mind Trick on Scooby. Hamill objects that the trick doesn't actually work, but Shaggy still thinks they can pull it off because Scooby doesn't know that.
  • Running Gag: Shaggy keeps asking Mark to autograph photos of himself, most of which show Hamill engaged in everyday activities, almost as if Shaggy's been stalking him. Shaggy's excuses for having the pics get progressively more preposterous, e.g. coincidentally flying past Mark's solo skydive in Wonder Woman's invisible jet.
  • Slasher Smile: The Fox Monster has a malicious, toothy grin.
  • Stealing the Credit: Mark's gym teacher, Mr. Roacher, keeps trying to say that he somehow had some influence on Hamill's action scenes during his movie career. Mark always corrects him.
  • Super-Deformed: The Fox Monster invokes a chibi-like appearance.
