“Dearest Mamo-chan, I hope you're doing okay. As for me, I'm doing fine so you don't need to worry. Oh, by the way, Mako-chan and the others have been really into this new idol group lately called the Three Lights. We saw them filming a drama at Juuban Park the other day. Minako-chan was all like 'Oh my god! Those three are so totally hot! I want to date all of them!' But not me, cuz you're the only man I need. To my beloved Mamo-chan. Sincerely, you're Usako.”
Usagi Tsukino

The girls begin the next chapter of their first year as high school students by applying for clubs that cater to their interests. Though their quest takes a halt by the appearance of the Three Lights who've selected Juuban High as their new school.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All for Nothing: Based on Usagi's first letter, Ami deduces that she forgot everything she learned while preparing for the entrance exams.
  • As You Know: Galaxia reminds Iron Mouse of her mission of collecting true Star Seeds so she can have complete control of the galaxy.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Played for Laughs. Minako brings up this trope when she learns that the shy and soft-spoken Ami is ranked at Number 25 of the Three Lights Fanclub.
  • Book Ends: The start of the episode involves the Inner girls trying out different clubs and activities. In the end, Usagi is revealed to have joined the manga club.
  • Call-Back: Usagi's public spat with Seiya plays out just like her disputes with Mamoru back in the first season. It even features the same background music.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Crush Blush: Luna is blushing red with sparkles in her eyes while Usagi bickers with Seiya.
  • Disappointed in You: The Starlights express disappointment at the Inner Guardians for losing to one Phage.
  • Gut Feeling: Usagi tells Luna that she has a bad feeling about their new situation.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Iron Mouse, and by extension her superior Galaxia, have made their base in a television production building called Ginga TV.
  • In Love with the Mark: Iron Mouse can't help but admire the football star Yuji Kayama for his majestic physique.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Usagi figures out that the jerk who keeps bumping into her is part of the Three Lights.
    • The rest of the Inner Guardians are introduced to the Sailor Starlights and their first Phage.
  • Irony: As Seiya points out to Usagi, lots of girls have fallen head over heels for him and flock to him for his attention. And while Usagi managed to earn his attention, she makes it clear that she has zero interest in him.
  • Jerkass Ball: Even though Usagi is clearly uncomfortable with Seiya's advances, her friends insist that she treat him with more respect and follow along with his requests.
  • Light 'em Up: Sailor Star Maker uses an energy attack called Star Gentle Uterus.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: This episode started the Running Gag with Rei popping up at Juuban High when the others least expected it.
    • She first appears casually sliding out from behind Minako as the Three Lights appear at the high school. The other girls never saw her, despite that all three of them were right behind Minako the entire time.
    • Rei suddenly appears in the gymnasium as the other four watch Seiya play basketball, freaking out Minako in particular with her sudden arrival.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The news of the Three Lights transferring to Juuban High compels Minako, a slacker who takes her time with coming to school, to arrive extra early.
  • Opportunistic Groupie: Minako takes every opportunity she can to get close with the Three Lights after their transfer. From having them sit next to her in homeroom to suggesting clubs to join.
  • Pocket Dimension: Deep within Ginga TV, passing an abandoned elevator lies Galaxia's throne room which is presented as space itself with a glass platform.
  • Refusal of the Call: Despite her incredible athletic talent, Makoto tries to refuse a track captain's offer of joining her team as she'd rather spend her time cooking.
  • Shout-Out: Ami passes off the lyrics to Danger Zone as information related to aerospace engineering.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Sailor Moon isn't too thrilled when Kayama's corrupted Star Seed turns him into a Phage.
  • Weaponized Stench: To everyone's horror, Sailor Guts attacks using acidic sweat shaped after footballs.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite being brutally tackled by Kayama, Seiya and the football star develop a manly bond over their impressive abilities.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Kayama tries to tackle Iron Mouse after she transforms in front of him.
  • You Fool!: Seiya calls one of his basketball opponents a fool during the game.
