“Petz! Calaveras! Come to your senses! Sisters shouldn't fight with one another. And you Rubeus, are unforgivable! How dare you play with people's feelings and trample on those who trust you?! I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DIC Episode: "Sibling Rivalry")

Rubeus assigns Petz and Calaveras to capture their traitorous sisters to force the Guardians into a decisive showdown. He even gifts Petz a special Black Moon Stick with the intention of using it to dispose of the women he utterly despises. As this happens, Chibi-usa makes a startling discovery.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All Your Powers Combined: The Guardians combine their energies to destroy the Black Moon Stick with Sailor Planet Power.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Rubeus gives Petz a Black Moon Stick which will amplify her Dark Thunder powers.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: After spending the episode taunting her older sister and is later electrocuted as payback, Calaveras uses her Dark Whip to save Petz when she throws herself into the black hole in a futile attempt to stop.
Calaveras: You know me, I can't let you have all the spotlight...
  • Ax-Crazy: The Black Moon Stick corrupts Petz to the point where she attacks Calaveras with Dark Thunder, laughing insanely after that.
  • Big Eater: Usagi only showed up to help Rei rake the leaves at the temple because of the promise of a potato cookout party.
  • Bowdlerise: The DIC dub removed the Toilet Humour, instead having the food Serena eats being “Chad’s weight gain bars, which are ten-thousand calories per bar”.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Petz refuses to kill Koan and Berthier just yet as she wants to wait for the Sailor Guardians to show up so she can kill them all.
  • Cassandra Truth: Koan and Berthier's warnings about Rubeus' true nature initially fall on the deaf ears of their older sisters.
  • Catch a Falling Star: The Sailor Guardians catch a falling Koan and Berthier shortly after the floating bubble bursts from Petz' Dark Thunder attack.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The Spectre Sisters have always had a thing for make up and cosmetics. So it only makes sense that they would open their own cosmetic business. Calaveras even uses her saleswoman talent to bring in potential customers, and Koan brings up how it was easier to sell door-to-door.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The first round between the Guardians and Petz leaves the heroes brutalized by Petz' amplified power boost.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Petz decides to attack Calaveras as payback for all the times she constantly belittled and taunted her throughout their lives.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: After losing the Black Moon Stick, a now weakened Petz refuses to be pitied by her traitorous sisters.
  • Easily Forgiven: Chibi-usa is perfectly comfortable being around Koan despite the older woman trying to kill her on multiple occasions. She even wishes she had an older sister like her.
  • Floating in a Bubble: Koan and Berthier are kept prisoner in a floating bubble.
  • For Your Own Good: Koan and Berthier try telling their older sisters what Rubeus is really like, with the latter sister even invoking the trope verbatim.
  • Foreshadowing: Wiseman warns Rubeus that he had better turn things around soon or else he will die in defeat.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Petz and Calaveras are purified by Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal after the Sailor Guardians destroy the Black Moon Stick.
  • Heel Realization: Calaveras goes through this motion after she's attacked by Petz but is shown kindness by Sailor Moon and her defected sisters.
  • Here We Go Again!: In the end, the sisters get into another squabble fest over how they should manage their beauty products and professionalism.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When the black hole activates from the Stick, Petz tries to use her remaining power to turn it off even if it means putting her life on the line.
  • Hostage Situation: Koan and Berthier are kidnapped by their older sisters to force the Sailor Guardians to fight them.
  • Internal Reveal: Chibi-usa discovers that Usagi and her friends are Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians.
  • It's All My Fault: Chibi-usa blames herself for Koan and Berthier's abduction as the two women tried to shield her from being taken.
  • Leave No Survivors: After Petz is defeated, Rubeus activates the Stick's second function which creates a dimensional rift intending to suck everyone, Guardian and Spectre Sister, inside it.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Berthier lamentably informs Ami that she and her sisters knew nothing about the grand schemes their superiors had in mind for the future.
  • Meaningful Echo: While working together to save their older sister, Berthier comments on how they wouldn't be the Four Spectre Sisters if one of them were to perish.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Berthier feels absolute shame for blindly following the Black Moon Clan and for harming the Sailor Guardians.
  • Never My Fault: Rubeus accuses Petz and Calaveras for allowing their younger sisters to betray the Black Moon Clan. Says the monster who manipulated Koan's feelings and tried to get her to commit an explosive suicide attack.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: The Spectre Sisters are officially redeemed and Chibi-usa knows the civilian identities of the Sailor Guardians.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Rubeus orders Petz and Calaveras to destroy Chibi-usa, the Sailor Guardians, and their traitorous sisters. Failure to complete any of the above will cost them their allegiance to their organization.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Calaveras has a moment of wide-eyed shock the moment Petz uses her Dark Thunder on her and the purified sisters.
    • Petz is left mouth agape when she realizes that Rubeus has been using her as an Unwitting Pawn all along and later when nearly she gets pulled into the dimensional rift.
  • Punch a Wall: Rubeus breaks one of his mirrors after learning the location of the Silver Crystal and how his plan to kill everyone was for naught.
  • * Series Fauxnale: For the DiC English dub. DiC had initially dubbed sixty-five episodes for daily syndication, but poor ratings in America for the syndicated run caused them to decide against dubbing the rest of the season for two years. The show's high ratings in Canada and Cartoon Network's reruns of the initial sixty-five in the US making the show more popular convinced them to resume dubbing the season in 1997.
  • Sibling Rivalry: After Rubeus leaves the room, the sisters begin to squabble like chickens. Hence the name of the first dub's title.
  • The Social Darwinist: The two older sisters proclaim that love and friendship are meaningless concepts to their Clan and only the mighty and powerful can create the world that they truly want.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Calaveras over Petz making Rubeus some pretty big promises about them eliminating all their enemies.
  • Toilet Humour: Usagi ends up passing gas as she consumes her many sweet potatoes.
  • Unwitting Pawn: After Petz is defeated, Rubeus actually congratulates her. He reveals he never expected her to win the fight, only to ensure everyone he needs eliminated would be gathered in one spot for his dimensional rift plan. He then leaves her to die along with everyone else.
  • Villain Opening Scene: Wiseman appears to warn Rubeus that he's close to walking the path of losers which equates to death. Rubeus promises him that he'll do everything in his power to achieve his goals, even if it means sacrificing the Spectre Sisters.
  • Villainous BSoD: Calaveras can only watch on in shock after Petz uses Dark Thunder on her, Koan and Berthier. Fortunately, the Sailor Guardians snap her out of it.
  • We Have Reserves: Rubeus rubs it in Petz' face that she's expendable and that he can always order new replacements whenever he wants.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Makoto and Minako react in shock after Rei brings up how Usagi's carefree attitude most likely led to Mamoru dumping her.
  • Wham Episode: Chibi-usa discovers the true identities of the Sailor Guardians, the Spectre Sisters have been redeemed and the location of the Silver Crystal is discovered by both Chibi-usa and Rubeus.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: When deciding to get rid of all three of her sisters, Petz reminds Calaveras of all the times she previously insulted her age and looks.
Petz: It doesn't look like you're laughing now.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The more Petz uses the Black Moon Stick to increase her Dark Thunder attacks, the more sadistic and power hungry she becomes. She even goes as far as to believe that she can become a new Clan leader with her power boost.
  • With Us or Against Us: Calaveras mentions to Petz how it's only a matter of time before their loyalty to the Clan is tested after the defection of their younger sisters. She's proven right when Rubeus shows up with their next mission.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • Calaveras invokes the trope just before she tries to have Koan and Berthier killed. Unfortunately for Calaveras, Petz fries her with Dark Thunder seconds later and deems her no longer useful in her plans.
    • Rubeus leaves Petz to die after the latter finishes her mission to gather the Sailor Guardians and the rest of the Spectre Sisters.
